You can close the entire street you know. All the houses there have lane access for their cars, so I don't want to hear that complaint.

You’ll need a lot more room than just the street itself for the construction.

Those services can be maintained during cut and cover, during the cut phase you dig them up and re-pipe them either on the edge of your cut or you swap them to another location entirely ahead of time.

It's exactly what we've seen with the current Broadway subway in the blocks with road decks. Those station boxes and road decks are cut and cover operations and had to have all the services that run along Broadway either relocated or maintained through construction.

Granted that the road is likely not wide enough in this location alone though, but there will at the very least be a cut and cover station in the area and it would be silly to consider a Broadway style traffic deck setup for a station on this section of 8th.

What kind of infrastructure run along the street versus the alleys?

If the ubc line gets approved this year, how long will it take to build?

Whatever the planned duration is, add a couple years.

Very roughly based on the previous projecs, give three years for procurement and five years for construction and commissioning.

COV said this in the recent Jericho Lands ODP update:

Quote:
Until funding is secured for the project, the Province is not able to provide an anticipated completion date. Once funding is confirmed the project would likely take 7-9 years to procure a contractor, design and construct the line.

so sad this wasnt done now. its a no brainer to finish off the Millennium-Line.

this is the next top priority transit project now. with BSP + Langley U/C now, our network is almost "done."

I believe that according to Translink's priorities the Skytrain network is not "done" until every regional city centre is connected. Langley is next, but Lonsdale and Maple Ridge still remain (with the Evergreen Extension designed to branch at Coquitlam towards Poco and potentially Maple Ridge).

They're still doing preliminary geotechnical work along West Broadway for the extension along most of the West Broadway section checking their monitoring wells in the next week.

Also some of the side streets north/south of West 8th Avenue between Blanca/Trimble are being monitored as well. Tremble, Sasamat, Tomie. Blanca is from West 10th-11th.

thats why i used "" around done. i think from a realistic standpoint, all the "real" centres are connected.

Maple ridge has a population of only 90k and the entire shore (West Van, City North Van + Dist. North Van) is 190k. but that 190k is spread over a massive area, which cant really be serviced just by getting to Lonsdale.

from a reality standpoint, i think "done" is acceptable once UBCx is built. of course there would be some nice things, the Purple-Line being one.

i am glad theyre doing planning/early works for this. but it shouldnt have been a different project. with all the money the feds throw at the east, would have been nice to get even a small bit of that to get to UBC.

Yeah, Langley at least has a sizeable population and growth potential for Fleetwood and Clayton; there’s no way in hell Maple Ridge is justified over Hastings or 41st.

I would think that the PoCo extension could start with just 1 station - to Lions Park/Shaughnessy.

i wonder what line would be more justified:
  • the "purple-line"
  • --- connecting from Metrotown, to Brentwood, to Hastings, to Lonsdale
  • the 41st-line
  • --- connecting from UBCx at UBC, looping down to 41st, to Metrotown

both lines, together, would create a pretty good loop for the region. but which one would be next on the list? (after UBCx is done). personally, i think the purple-line should be first. but with all the up-zoning in CoV, maybe the UBCx - 41st - Metrotown loop would be more needed.

the $$$ it would cost to do just 1 station, would probably make that a no-go. it would probably be cheaper to avoid the flying gantry and just build it like how they did UBCx along the railway yard.

I'd love to see a loop like that as it would enhance connections across the system. Passengers moving to and from the south to the east or north-east (such as Richmond-Coquitlam or Surrey-YVR) could avoid the busy downtown/Broadway area altogether. If desired, they could build the connection at Metrotown with an extra platform to allow for splitting the line as needed (ie Lonsdale-Metrotown and Metrotown-UBC).

Eh, not if/when UBCx comes first. Ridership drops because more students switch to the M-Line,* and all the mayors complain that Vancouver and Burnaby are double-dipping.

*Granted, Oakridge and maybe Kerrisdale will be a town centre by then, but two hubs does not a SkyTrain make.

Based on current population, you are right.

BUT ... and this is a huge point to consider, the only remaining land in the entire Lower Mainland that can accommodate a huge expansion of housing is in Maple Ridge and Mission.

Many thousands of acres, all out of the ALR, lie east of 240th street from the Lougheed past Dwedney Trunk Road right to the base of the mountain in Maple Ridge and the same for Mission.

As Gretsky used to say, "don't skate to where the puck is, skate to where the puck is going to be".

Except that current projections have the puck ending up everywhere but Maple Ridge. We're talking about another Langley extension, but for a fraction of Surrey-Langley's population.
