A lot of the border towns (even small ones) have decay on the level you just don't see in Canada. On the other hand they usually have more grandeur if you know where to look for it.
I find that, sometimes depending solely on sheer luck, many Canadians often come back with diametrically opposed opinions of the exact same places in the US. It's dependent on which part of town they ended up in.

Those are very good points. With that in mind, New England is consistently nicer than the Maritimes despite being cut from the same cloth. Places like Mahone Bay and Chester in Nova Scotia could easily double for a prosperous NE town though. Then again, as soon as you step foot inside shops, homes, restaurants the merchandise/decor are noticeably less nice once again.
