I doubt it makes much of a difference.
I think we've seen that Trudeau's strength lies in handling crises, while he has difficulties with the day-to-day management of government. While Poilievre hasn't shown us what he'd be like in the latter case, Trudeau's issues combined with the impact of events such as high inflation and housing costs gave the electorate a strong desire for change.

Until Trump 2.0, that is. It's almost the perfect storm of events - Trump's aggressive and unhinged behaviour, Trudeau's decision to retire, and Poilievre (if we're honest about it) being very slow to pivot in response. Polievre may be starting to change, but now he's coming from behind (actions, not polls) and events are proceeding so quickly that he'll likely be scrambling for a bit. Others have commented that Canadians want stability in unstable times and I do think that Poilievre's inability to change as fast as the Liberals have done is hurting him and the CPC significantly. That doesn't rule out a Conservative government by any means - the Liberals still have to campaign in part on their record - but at this point in time, if one asks which leader is better suited to handle a crisis, the answer is not Poilievre.

He will have a chance to contrast his approach with Carney during a campaign. The debate and events across the country might be only of peripheral interest to most of the politically disengaged but the Conservatives have a lot of money to amplify that at the door and in a heavy ad blitz.

They are already throwing a ton of anti-Carney ads out there, but they are all "Carbon Tax Carney" based and really missing the mark IMO.

I saw one the other day and was appalled by the out of context bits and pieces strung together to slag Carney. Even worse was one from some anti-PP third party organization that came close to suggesting that PP sacrificed babies to drink their blood. If this is what we can expect in the campaign, it's going to be ugly indeed.

PP and the Tories inability to change the narrative away from "carbon tax Carney" is shocking. They are still campaigning like it was January and, at this point, that is a world away from today's reality and Canadian's top priorities.

PP is going to lose this election if he keeps this up but, regardless of who wins, the NDP are toast. At this point they will be lucky to get 10 seats all thanks to Singh who put his pension above the good of the party {and nation} by not pulling down the gov't when he had the chance.

I'd guess if we are being charitable maybe they want to lock down the 5% of the population for whom the Carbon Tax is the key driver of their vote and probably just as importantly their dollars. They can pivot later. It's also probably an attempt at tainting him as a liar. They will throw a lot at the wall and hope cumulatively it starts to stick.

What is the point of "Carbon tax Carney" ads? The Conservatives will not appeal to Red Tories with this hopelessly expired messaging. Are they trying to shore up the "base"? Don't they already have that sewn up, or is there a risk that some of the hard right vote will go to Mad Max and his Peculiar People's Party?

I watched it this morning live. It's really the tale of two halves; his stuff on Trump and the USA tariffs was good as it usually is, and his plans for building the Canadian economy were good too. but like blackdog pointed out, these are ideas which Carney has himself adopted into the Liberal pitch, which a lot more people are paying to right now.

The other half was him going on and on about the carbon tax. Like someone has to get through to him that it's over, it's time to drop it. I'm starting to take it personally that he thinks that people like myself would buy into the "he's lying, trust me bro" approach here.

I think Pierre has one final shot to turn things around, but it's a bit of a hail mary. The more that Carney speaks and interacts with the media, it's clearly evident that he kind of sucks at it, and has a very short trigger. Dude was an absolute dick to Rosemary Barton today. There's something about this blind trust thing that clearly annoys Mark. Pierre would be smart to try and exploit this during a debate to see if he can get Mark to crack. I'm aware that Pierre is an absolute dick too, but I think most people already know that. If he can get Mark to explode he could come out looking good in comparison.

The exchange between himself and Barton in question:

I'm surprised you interpret his response that way. He certainly schooled Barton, but in the calm, measured way that seems to be his baseline. I could see that he won't suffer fools gladly, but he seems to me to be a man fully in control of himself. Whether he has a nasty/angry streak, I couldn't say but we've never seen it.

I am really really really surprised that Pierre after being on Parliament Hill 20+ years does not understand how our system works - the misinformation he is spreading about Carney is telling - he's an idiot for thinking Canadians can't see through it.

I have always wondered what people mean when they call someone an elite. Does it mean educated? Wealthy?

Pierre is rich but not educated. Is he elite? Carney is rich and educated. Is that the difference?

Also why is it used as a pejorative? Doesn’t everyone want to be elite? Why would we want someone who is not elite running the country?

It's funny voters expected billionaires like Trump and Elon Musk to work in the average person's interest. Millionaires like Poilievre and Carney not much better. In Ontario, we also have Doug Ford. Maybe Canadians can learn from the mistake that US voters just made? Mark Carney not necessarily a bad choice for PM, but his wealth definitely should be on people's minds.

Elite in ability, not the company you keep.

Justin Trudeau probably didn't know very many 20 somethings struggling to get into the housing market. The CPI data said that everything was fine, so he had no reason to think otherwise. It ended up being a major blind spot.

"Elite" to me is something to aspire to and certainly the type of person I'd want to see lead the country. It needs empathy to work effectively in politics, but why settle for less than the best?

I'm surprised that you interpret his response that way. He gets asked a tough question which he should have seen coming, and when pressed gives a condescending and snippy response: "look inside yourself" and "you start from a prior of conflict and ill will". Just because he isn't raising his voice doesn't make what he's saying any less problematic. He can answer these questions without the attitude.

Someone has to coach him up on how to handle the media. Prepare your responses and be robotic like Trudeau. It drove me crazy when he did it, but at least he always remained calm.

There is another North American politician who accuses the media of being out to get him as well. But I'm sure people don't want to hear that comparison.

Things are looking very bleak for the NDP. They were able to "save the furniture" in Ontario last month but they don't have the advantage of Official Opposition. In 1984, Ed Broadbent was able to keep the NDP presence in Parliament when the NDP was polling at around 9% after running a stellar campaign. But that was a very different time when the Conservatives were still the Progressive Conservatives and there wasn't the Trump tariff threat.

If this is how Carney reacts to a simple question, man he’s gonna get smashed in Parliament. JT was ridiculous talented at keeping cool and staying on message, however wrong it was.

This is a completely different world for Carney. Gonna be fun to watch.

So weird to me. Carney grew up in a home with a stay at home mom and a dad who was a school principal. He got into Harvard on an academic scholarship. He is wealthy because he has been professionally successful and self made. He’s also not a billionaire or anything. He’s not even worth what a fourth line NHL player would be.

Why should voters prefer someone who has not been successful and how does being successful mean you are out of touch. I never understand why people think a great leader has to be an everyman. No CEO of a major company is that. Why would we expect the CEO of an entire country be that. Such an odd narrative.

I really doubt that Trudeau didn’t know 20 year olds couldn’t afford housing because he has a net worth the same as a successful small businessman. It’s hard to believe an entire government would base its housing policy on the prime minister having personal acquaintances looking for a house.
