Carbon pricing is being cancelled because Poilievre has made it politically toxic through an opportunistic campaign of misinformation, not because it’s ineffective. Whatever it is replaced with (and it will be replaced with something) will cost taxpayers money, unlike carbon pricing, which gave more money back to most taxpayers than they paid. So, yeah. Pat on the back for that.
This is the reason carbon pricing was championed by Stephen Harper, was part of the Conservative platform under Erin O'Toole during the 2021 election, and was approved as a policy by Canadians in three federal elections.
Since you asked.
Per capita emissions in Canada have declined by 25 percent relative to the 2005 baseline year.
Overall, Canada's emissions have declined by 8 percent relative to 2005. It would have dropped much further but oil production has increased to set a new record high level every single year under Trudeau. (Oh, but I thought Trudeau was an enemy of the oil and gas industry!)
As a function of the economy, (GHG per gross domestic product) emissions have declined by 30 percent relative to 2005. (42 percent relative to 1990)
