Heres my attempt @ weather pics. Nothing like Flash, but he has that timing down. Lightning is a pain in the butt to get a pic of, always flashes while i'm messin with the camera then no flashes while the shutters open.

Anyways the clouds surrounding the ESB gave a hint of the storms coming later that night.

More yard pics. Today I cleaned out our fountain and filled it. One of our flowers was also blooming so I grabbed a few pics of it.

My dad used to do lawn care/landscaping. One of the jobs he did was for a huge house in West Austin in the hills. Part of the payment and agreement was that he take this fountain, and the deer statue, as well as some large planters. My dad, having a green thumb and love for landscaping happily took it. The bottom bowl on this thing ways around 500+ pounds. With the base it's over 7 feet tall. We just have it sitting in the ground. The birds and the bees like it. So do I. My bedroom window is about 15 feet away and in the early spring and fall I can hear it.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b234/KevinFromTexas/P1000098.jpg

These are Amarillas. They bloom for much of the spring and summer. These smell so good and strong. Kind of like honey suckle. These are pink, but we also have some white ones.

I definately like the color one best. The colors in the photo are beautiful, and it's a pity to take them away.

Well, honestly, I'm not a fan of any digital b/w pics... There's something anachronistic about them. I mean, you can see it's a digital photo - then why isn't it in color?

@Kev - that's one impressive fountain. The deer statue, not so much. As for the photos, great shots of the flowers, looks like they were taken on a cool day, and the lighting and colors in the fountain shots just say to me "reality".

Ditto, and the feel of those colors... To me the color version is less "clinical" than the b/w one.

Yeah that deer needs a paint job. I don't think it's been painted since we aquired it about 12 years ago. And yeah, I'm still fiddling with the settings. I'm enjoying it though, I suppose that's what matters. Thanks Swede.

Yeah, it feels wrong to shoot b/w with digital. Granted, it does work on some shots, but not too many IMO. It's much more of a challenge and rewarding to get great colour pictures anyhow. It's a shame too, cuz my camera does have some cool b/w filters built in.

Not to say I don't like b/w, but it better have some film grain!

You can say the same about highly saturated images, of which I see much more often than black and white. Anyways how does one tell the the difference between a photo taken from a digital camera and one not?

Personally, I prefer black and white over colour photos. Sometimes after I take photos, I end up processing most of them in black and white and then I look them over and realize what I have done and I re-edit them in colour to appease the masses because I know people will not like it (not that they will necessarily like them in colour either). Still, probably around 1/3 of them end up being black-and-white or sepia-toned.

Also, I should note that converting to black and white using gradient map in Photoshop looks A LOT better than simple desaturation.

HDR is really cool isn't it! I've given it a few shots as well, but I think it's really hard to get it right. For me, it ends up pretty much the same as "too much" use of the shadows/highlights tool in Photoshop, but with better image quality in the extreme areas. But you still get the halos around the contrast in the pictures (as seen in your last two shots, around the building).

I guess it's really useful when you can fully master it.

If you see halos after adjusting shadows or highlights, then adjust midtone contrast. That's why it is there after all.

Ninjatune
Jul 12, 2006, 4:40 AM
or just open up the radius - if you're using photoshop

halos and hdr go hand in hand, and since i don't care for cs2's hdr tool, things work a little different, software wise.. still much to learn...

Yeah, I've done a few experiments, but nothing worth showing here. It still looks wack in the transitions between the "extremes". I've used PS CS2's built-in HDR-feature so far, but I will check out that prog you're talking about. :)

Yes, you remembered correctly. I just used a roll of 10$ photolab film, 200 ASA. The colours will probably be a lot different when I scan the negatives, prints just never have the same raw quality that negs do.

I'm thinking Feist too. I went to take pictures of Wilco last night at Bluesfest and couldn't get anywhere NEAR the stage :(

During which event in Folkets Park was this taken? Football? Concert?
I gotta got my ass up in that ferris wheel some time soon - it's supposed to be the tallest in northern Europe, I reckon. I bet there are some cool views from the top floor/roof of Folkets Hus at Nobeltorget as well - and I think it's "open to the public" as well.
So I'm gonna get my ass up there as well. :)

Thanks hack, ax, ken and staff! :)

It's football. It's taken just before Sweden's match against Paraguay. So at this moment, we still had hope for a successfull World Cup... :happysad:

You should definately take a ride in the ferris wheel. It's worth every penny. :)

Here are some other shots I took that day:

Indeed it could! And I really like that view with John's Cathedral, Kronprinsen and the Hilton.

Continuing the Malmö theme by posting a photo of the Hilton Malmö City (Malmö's most "New Yorkish" building in my opinion) that I took last summer:

^ That's a view I see every day on my bike ride home from work! :) I'm not a fan of the Hilton architecture though...

Took a walk here in Kista a day ago. And found this option.

The blur is not lens blur, but "gaussian blur" with low opacity on a second layer in Photoshop to create a "dreamy" look. I don't know if I succeded though..

man, this thread is sick! great work everyone..

upward: sorry, i missed your post- the program is called photomatix.. its the best i've found so far... CS2's HDR tool just doesn't do it for me... which probably means I don't know how to use it-

Damn man, you really got the HDR-thing together now.
About your mixer photo - nothing seems to be really in focus on that one. :(

Anyway, great work (everyone)!

thanks! the trial is free, only it leaves a watermark.... but there are ways around that :haha:
I still plan on purchasing a copy.. It's fairly priced and I can see myself using it quite a bit..

She and her two roommates want to help me build a portfolio of portraits. :D

By the way, that was edited in The Gimp in Linux. It has some interesting effects (like this matte finish), but I don't think it can replace Photoshop for my main editing needs...
