^nice picture!
can you see it from the 5 at all? i was driving thru the Mt. St. Helens volcanic monument but couldnt see it...is there a certain spot from the 5? or is it simply too far away?
You can see it in Portland and Vancouver, but once you get near it to the North, the foothills are too close to the freeway, blocking your view.

hey staff, did you construct the whole thing?
staff
Apr 24, 2007, 10:29 AM
It's a technique called "tilt shift" - a special kind of lens that creates this effect.
Although if you can't afford a tilt shift lens, like me, the effect is easily achieved in Photoshop CS. :)
Looks kinda freaky, doens't it?
HomeInMyShoes
Apr 24, 2007, 12:28 PM
"tilt shit". Haha. That's a great typo.
Did you do any sharpening to get the kind of edgy miniature constructiony kind of feel prior to doing the shifting?
JMancuso: "one of these things is not like the others" :)
staff
Apr 24, 2007, 5:57 PM
Haha, I noticed that now!
All I did was using the quick mask with the gradient feature to mark where the lens blur would take effect. Very simple, really!
There are some really cool tilt shift images to be found on flickr.com, some of them real (tilt shift lens used) and some of them "fake", like mine.

I did an HDR shot today
http://webfiles.uci.edu/cfagan/ssp/randomphoto/hdr_laguna.jpg
I've found that as long as I'm using reasonably high shutter speeds, I can do these without a tripod. I enable auto exposure bracketing and continuous drive mode and fire off the three bracketed shots rapidly. They're not perfectly aligned, but they're close enough that Photomatix can take care of it.
staff
May 6, 2007, 2:13 PM
Great one, Upward. HDR should be kept subtle, as in your pic.

Awesome shot of an awesome building!
Great one, Upward. HDR should be kept subtle, as in your pic.
I agree; subtlety is the key to effective HDR. That one was done with the "contrast adaptation" tone mapping. The "details enhancer" mode produces a more noticeable and fake-looking effect. Because I am using the free version of Photomatix, that mode also happens to put on the watermark...
http://webfiles.uci.edu/cfagan/ssp/randomphoto/img_6619_8.jpg
I think the other one looks better, and not just because of the watermark.
staff
May 7, 2007, 12:26 AM
I agree - the last one you posted looks a bit "plastic", watermark or not.
Impressive though that you are able to make AEB-shots hand-held. I've tried it myself and it didn't work well at all. I guess I'm too shaky.
What shutter speeds are the three shots taken at?
Upward
May 7, 2007, 6:10 AM
The shutter speeds were 1/125 and 1/320. There was a third picture that was brighter, but I deleted it.
The key is not only the shutter speed, but the frame rate. My 20D will take 5 frames per second, which means there's very little chance for the camera to move between pictures. With a slower frame rate, it would be harder. Without an automatic exposure bracketing setting, it would be impossible.

May 7, 2007, 9:28 AM

Hey guys, I've been working on a picture/album hosting project and I just wanted to let you know for all you picture posters. It's at www.fojax.com. It's still in testing but id like to get some feedback and get people to start using it. Sign up for a free account and let me know what you think and report any bugs to support@fojax.com. This isn't spam. It's not a money making site. Just a research project of mine.

HomeInMyShoes
May 8, 2007, 12:08 PM
^There are no stupid questions. I'm sure others will explain this better.
HDR stands for high dynamic range. You increase the dynamic range by bracketing your exposures and then using some software to 'merge' the exposures. You can do it as long as your camera lets you bracket exposures. Generally you use a tripod so the composition and objects remain exactly where they are in the multiple exposures, although as Upward stated, if you shoot fast enough and quick enough between the exposures (auto-exposure bracketing) then you can get reasonable results. HDR is usually done with 2 to 5 exposures.
There is a thread on software. Photomatix seems to be popular.
