I don't understand how they determine where the red seats go? it looks like it's pretty random.

the seats are in about 4 shades - red, maroony red, grey and dark grey and it doesn't make any sense to how they are but it would be helpful if you are looking for your seat when you come back at least - its much more noticeable in person

The marketing team would have studied where typically
the least seats are occupied in various sections of the stadium to determine what colours to put where. THe objective is to give the illusion to a home viewing of more bodies in seats. They would probably go thru stadium stats dating back years. This info is handed over to the architect. So the seats really are not randomly placed but are designed to look that way.

This is about the third or fourth time you've had reading comprehension issues in the last few days. If you read/quoted the whole post, you'd see I was calling the Metrodome in Minnesota shitty.

I would like to have seen fountains installed around the building against the concrete walls that will not have video screens. Maybe an idea for the future.

The walls you're referring to are the ramp walls that stick out all around the building. I'm hoping that this is where they place the "event related fabric", the large outdoor posters of say Geroy Simon, or Eric Hassli...etc.

Thanks for this. Someone who thinks like me. I think I wanna contact Duncan and Pavco and suggest that for the near future. The sound of water in fountains is very calming. Could have a positive effect an guests and add a beautiful lighting effect also.

The could collect rainwater and use it in the fountains. Sort of kidding here but it is a possibility

There will be two layers of the Polytan artificial turf. A bottom layer for grid-iron and one for the Caps to play on that will be "rolled" on top. Hmm...I'd like to see more details on how that will work. I suppose it could be a fixed bottom layer version of a Polytan turf like LigaTurf, with LigaGrass being the rolled out one for the Caps. Either way it's a lot of rubber/sand infill for both pitches.

Brief mention of the double pitch at the Province - The B.C. Lions football team will play with the base artificial turf, while an additional layer with soccer lines will be rolled out on top during soccer games. There is also other stadium news at the article linked below.

I saw that in the province as well. I don't know what to make of it. Is that the only reference anyone has come across?

That seems like a logistical nightmare. I assumed they would scrub away the lines after each game and repaint (with a water soluble paint), like they do at Empire.

Overground
Sep 8, 2011, 5:16 PM
Seems really weird to me. I can't seem to find anything else on it either.

I thought Pavco had an RFP on a fancy machine that takes lines off the pitch. Similar to the one in Seattle. If that holds true than the only reason I see them having a roll-out pitch for the Caps is because they want them to have a satisfactory surface for as long as possible as a single pitch shared with CFL would have half the lifespan due to the damage grid-iron causes. I'd love see how this will be implemented and the quality of it.

MJDDawg
Sep 8, 2011, 5:47 PM
Typical fine journalism by the Province newspaper.

I've confirmed with Pavco that the comment by the author of the article is WRONG.

There is only one permanent turf for both teams that will be ‘scrubbed’ for conversion between different field sports.

I dare anyone to look at the building now and say that the project is "just a new roof for $563 million" with a straight face.

It's a brand new building built on the skeleton of the old one for less than half the price it would have cost from scratch.

while i agree that the entire scope of the project is pretty impressive. and playing field is going to be awesome. i have an issue with the concourse. from the pics i've seen, it still looks pretty dull. certainly it's improved from the previous model of bc place, but i can't help but think they could've done more to liven up the concourse area. any disagree or agree?

i'm curious to find out what it looks like for people, when the enter into the stadium. will it be a dull sight, looking at the concourse, or will it be spectacular? something decorative like the ones below:

http://images.travelpod.com/users/melissab2009/2.1293724118.concourse-of-yankee-stadium.jpg

http://domesticfork.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DomesticForkYankeeStadium.jpg

or even lighting effects like this:
http://knoxify.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/neyland_stadium_concourse.jpg

as opposed to just this:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4788152122_677511440c.jpg

although, the above pic is a much improvement over this:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4143/4788152220_2cc74467c2.jpg
^that's just terrible. can't believe we've put up with that kind of stadium for so long.

and what about the entrance to the new and improved bc place? is it anything like the old one:
http://www.bcplacestadium.com/images/big_entrance.jpg

i don't know. thoughts? do you think they'll hang something from the top? or have lighting effects in the concourse, rather than just the white lights from above? brand name stores? will they have like a whitecaps fc store at bc place? or a lions' den store kind of thing in the concourse?

MJDDawg
Sep 9, 2011, 9:55 PM
I agree with you in that even though the renovated concourse looks way better than before, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Granted it's a much more tightly confined concourse than the examples you've provided, but after seeing your pic's of the Vol's Neyland Stadium concourse, I wonder if Pavco couldn't have done a bit more with the lighting and the pillars.

How much more work and how much more expensive could it have been to paint all the pillars & walls, put in some wall lamps, and maybe some Lions and Whitecaps FC wrappings on alternate pillars? Would make a huge difference to the look and feel of the concourse. Considering the coin that's gone into making this a first class facility, to me, the renovated concourse looks like it was an afterthought and still looks "old", when with a little paint and some decorative flair, it could have been given a much more inviting and soothing feel. Of course, that's my bias for the earth tones coming out. Why some consultants think that bright blues, greens and reds are the only colors that should be used in stadium signage I'll never know.

Whatever they end up naming the new stadium, I just hope that it is something that makes sense and sounds nice to say. This too is part of marketing. Telus Field at BC Place, Telus Park at BC Place, Optik Field at BC Place, etc. The term, "BC Place" should henceforth be used to describe the, "district". The entertainment district known as BC Place.

Let's get it right people. It's not that difficult.

BC Place was deflated.

None of the possible names you listed sound nice to say or really make sense; "Blank Field at BC Place" is not very succinct. How nice does this sound "the Bell Pitch Downtown at Telus Field at BC Place". Its a long ass name that the public will shorten to BC Place, so the corporate sponsor would get significantly less value from the deal. It's bad marketing.

I don't see any reason to retain "BC Place" in the name, especially since this is practically a brand new facility. As for the district being called BC Place what does that encompass? Will it be Rogers Arena at BC Place as well and will stadium station need to be renamed BC Place station?

Powerwashing would be good, but I do wish they'd give the concrete between the metal roof ring and the new glass a coat of white or grey paint. It would make a massive difference to the stadium's appearance for minimal cost.

I haven't figured out why they just didn't cover up that whole ring by extending that silver cladding right to the bottom lip of the ring instead of just doing the top half and leaving the bottom half exposed.

There are no plans to change the concrete sheerwalls on the ramps (the wall between the new glass facades they cut out of the ramps), so no further metal cladding other than what's being installed on the outdoor video board wall. The plan is that some or all of the ramp walls may be employed for signage. So best case is that they'll cover those ugly walls with large event related banners ala Rogers Arena.

Well, I'd say Skydome/Rogers Centre is still a unique and impressive building. Some of the new nostalgic baseball parks (starting with Camden Yards about 20 years ago) hold up.

BTW, they are testing part of the digital ring inside the stadium, as seen on the right side of the interior cam.

I wish they would just get on with announcing the new name of the stadium. When PAVCO says they have not made a decision yet...that's bunk. Logos, letterhead, souvenirs, signage, programming LED displays, etc take weeks if not months to design and produce in quantity. They know already and they should just tell us.

Also, I have found nothing about the unveiling of the Terry Fox Memorial. I assume it will happen in conjunction with the Annual Terry Fox Run on Sept 18th but there has been no advance press on this at all.

Your post got me to wondering about how our renovated concourses/concessions compared to some other stadia. I still think the new look is a bit too sterile and would benefit from better lighting, colors and maybe some team banners and wrappings. But it's still not bad compared to these:

If you search "bc place" on youtube then sort by upload date, under search options, you can find new videos. There are a few videos from a couple days ago uploaded by a contractor that show some of the Suites as well as some concourse TV's being mounted.

Tons of cool testing of the lights last night, they can do a lot of different things, like the video above.

However with respect to "light pollution", the BC Place system totally dwarfs anything else on any building in the city. It is distracting in my apartment and I live near Davie and Pacific.

Personally I don't mind it, but they will get a ton of complaints if they fire it up all the time.

Have they taken the web cams offline? I'm only getting messages saying that no images are available at this time.

Oops, scratch that. They're back online.

But check out LED ribbon board...looks like it says "Dolphins Win".

The lights continue to amaze but it seems they are having constant trouble with some sections. Hopefully they are easily fixed and it doesn't look perenially glitchy like Science World?

I have a question:

Since BC Place is owned by the province, and they have certain exemptions on what City Hall can and cannot make them do, does this include turning the lights down if there are complaints?

Agreed there are going to be a ton of complaints.

I live in a building near BC Place and I'm in a west facing unit so I can't see the stadium directly, but I could see the reflection off of surrounding buildings and it is bright as hell!

Personally I love the LED lighting and I would never complain about light or noise pollution downtown, but I'm really glad my place doesn't look directly at this.

Ya it totally does, I wonder if BC place will be getting a pre-season game some time soon.

Technically, provincially- and federally-owned land doesn't have to adhere to municipal policies and requirements. Generally speaking, they do adhere to them to play nice.

Your post got me to wondering about how our renovated concourses/concessions compared to some other stadia. I still think the new look is a bit too sterile and would benefit from better lighting, colors and maybe some team banners and wrappings. But it's still not bad compared to these:

Cowboys stadium upper concourse/concession:

Not bad, but I really do hope that they spice up their concourse, cause when people enter into the stadium, the externals will definitely be impressive, but once you come in, will there be a let down? Surely half a billion dollars worth could do a bit more with regards to the concourses, than what they currently have? Spice it up a little bit, with lighting effects, flat screen tv's in the concourses, and even some flags of the Lions, or the 'Caps, since they both share the building. I'm gonna check out the stadium at some point, in either a Caps game or a Lions game, and I'm curious to see the concourse in person. It just, bugs me that they didn't do a better job with that, and that's where people will be at, during half time of a Lions game, or before the game, or when there's intermission at a Cap's game. Should be an experience to walk around the concourse of the building, and be awed at the improvements. The interior (concourse especially) will be dated pretty fast, if it remains as is. too bad, cause it's gonna cost another couple "millions" to upgrade that part of the stadium. May as well have done it with the half billion they spent in this upgrade.

Check your facts or read the thread thoroughly before complaining with no basis in fact.

The teams havent even moved in yet. Maybe wait until the team spirit is in the new building before judging. You dont hang artwork in a new home until you have moved in...do you?

I heard from a friend who is with the Whitecaps organization that they haven't done any renos on the players locker rooms. Apparently all the showers haven't been updated since they were first built.

I hope that the Lions & Whitecaps organizations will push for some updates. I know when the Canucks redid their locker loom they said it was part of their effort to attract top talent.

Maybe they got a used control panel from Miami?

They just unveiled the new Terry Fox Statues today. They also used the giant screen behind them to tell the story of his journey.

Beats the hell outta the old one!

What a contrast the old is compared to the new. Look how dull BC Place looks too...

I agree. I didn't even know the arch was a Terry Fox memorial until a few years ago. It didn't represent him at all.

To say the old memorial was terrible is an understatement. It was embarrassing and because it had no apparent meaning almost disrespectful.

The new one is great! A well thought out design that invites the public to experience the memorial up close. I love it.

I think the lights are awesome, but I'd be willing to bet we aren't going to see all these flashing/cycling colours on a regular basis. This is just testing to get out the gremlins. Chances are 90% of the time, the effect will be subtle uplighting on the masts and a less vibrant roof colour (probably white, like the ring on the old marshmallow), with possible displays of colour and motion during TD's, goals, or special events (i.e. pink during the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, red and white on Canada Day, green on St. Patty's Day, etc.).

You don't have to wait until the teams move in. They are going to be in there in like two weeks, maybe less time than that. It's a fact that the Lions and Whitecaps are going to play at BC Place, why do they have to wait until those teams actually move in, before hanging artwork?

My judgement is based on the images that are in circulation. And there's been no updates to the concourses, to my knowledge (has there?), so based on what's out there, it's dull. It could be better (much better, especially with the money that's gone into these renovations). Just sayin...

Judging by how much of the finishing touches have been accomplished in the last two weeks I'm sure they could work miracles in the next two and surprise everybody with the new interior.

Btw, just found out I'm going to the Lion's game on opening day!
