City Creek condos nearly ready for grand opening
September 14, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City's skyline is changing, and so is its downtown residential real estate market. In a few months condos at the new City Creek Center project will be open for its first residents.

The two buildings in the middle of the block on South Temple, between Main Street and West Temple, are known as Richards Court. They're now almost fully enclosed, and interior work is well underway. They'll be ready for occupancy at the beginning of 2010.

Demand for condo units overlooking Temple Square, as these do, is said to be high. That's no surprise to real estate broker Babs De Lay. She's the principal broker for Urban Utah Homes and Estates.

"I think if you were Catholic and you lived in Rome, wouldn't you want to see the Vatican?" De Lay asked.

The downtown residential real estate market, hot a few years ago, slowed down considerably with the economic slide. But Prudential Utah real estate broker Gary Howard says the demand remains strong with empty nesters and young professionals.

Howard predicts the market will bounce back strong thanks to continued low interest rates, a new downtown supermarket, TRAX to the airport and the massive retail-residential influx coming with City Creek.
"The synergy just creates a lot more desirability, and so you get a lot of people who then start realize there's a lot happening downtown--and even more, and even more, and even more as time goes on. And as a result, it becomes a more desirable place to live," Howard explained.

"It's a very good thing," De Lay said. "Their price point is very high, but their quality is very high. So, people can either use that as a choice or a comparable to what they'll be purchasing."

Other elements of the project are also making progress: Assembly of the steel framework for the retail center well underway. It is expected to open in spring of 2012.

This is an exciting time for Downtown SLC and it's metro. The City Creek Center will become a model to emulate for many 'downtown cores' across the country. Already, we've seen a dramatic uptick in new and attractive businesses opening up all along Main Street. I'm also excited to see so many corporate location announcements, i.e. expansions and relocations being announced lately. I knew that the prognosticators had predicted an early recovery for the Wasatch Front, but I hadn't expected it so soon.

Deer Valley employees have been tight lipped this week, but now they can brag all they want. Deer Valley has been named the best ski area in North America by the readers of SKI Magazine for the third year in a row. Staffers celebrated quietly earlier this week but were asked to keep the news under wraps until the formal announcement was released. According to Deer Valley President Bob Wheaton, the resort topped five categories including Guest Services, Slope Grooming, On-mountain Food and Dining. As always, Wheaton deferred all of the credit for the honor to his staff. "I am very pleased and proud of the staff that earned this award," he said. Each year, SKI Magazine sends 20,000 ballots to its readers and also collects votes online. According to Wheaton, Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, Canada earned the No. 2 spot and Colorado's Vail took third. In the 20-plus years that SKI has been conducting the poll, only Vail has matched Deer Valley's hat trick.

Delts-nice updates, when I'm back in town need to check out the progress.

Havent checked it out yet, but I've heard they restored some space on main (near Kearns?) and opened up a new pub, The Beerhive? Sounds cool, someone should get some pics and post.

An update over here, Denver just topped out the 45 story Four Seasons, Hotel and Private Residences. They hoisted a 75 foot spire to the top of it the other day, and it has really changed the skyline. If you'd like to check it out here is the link for that thread:

Actually DEN, one of the SLC forumers (UrbanBoy) took a look inside the Beerhive recently and posted pics on one of the threads there in the Mountain West Forum. Here's a pic I took recently of the outside.

Cool pic Tony! There are a number of buildings downtown that haven't been recorded as often as I would like to see. They're often difficult to find on flickr. Sometimes they are posted under the strangest titles, and you just come across them by accident.

Millions must be raised for Ogden High historic restoration

Ogden School District launched its capital campaign Friday morning. The district is using bond money for basic renovations of the school ? but, braving the recession, they want to raise up to $15 million to restore the historic elements of the art deco school, which was built in 1936. ...Friday, hundreds of alumni, students and community leaders gathered on the west side of the school to celebrate the fact that $6.8 million of the Ogden High School Capital Campaign has been committed by major donors.

Based on these pledges, restoration work is already under way, but $2.2 million still must be raised.

"This is an icon in our state. It is an icon in the community," said Spencer Eccles, the new executive director of the governor's Office of Economic Development, speaking to the group. He represented the Hayward Family Foundation, as well as the George and Dolores Dore' Eccles Foundation, each of which donated $1 million....
