I am not a big fan of duplicating historical styles or replicating buildings. the main reason is because it lessens the importance of the original. I think it is okay if you take some classic elements and give them a modern touch, maybe with different materials, or replicating certain elements of a building or slightly different scales, etc. But to build a new building and try to make it look old, no thanks. I am a firm believer in buildings reflecting society at the time they were built. the small cottages and bungalows in Central City reflect the area's history as being a place for blue collar workers or mid century modern buildings reflecting society's desire for high style without all the detail and new application of modern materials.

^As a newcomer to town, may I ask what that sculpture symbolizes and if it's slated to survive the Gallivan reconstruction? I can't say I'm a huge fan. Great picture though!

Smut, that's an enormous sundial. I think the rock is a reference to time or timelessness. As a public art object, it's probably too obscure. Most people don't get it and they certainly can't tell time with a sundial. Maybe people use it to tell when their lunch hour is over.

In an article in today's Tribune, Howa says he might drop the residential component from the Marmalade project. What's done so far resembles a strip mall a lot. He says condo sales will take a long time to recover.

The sculpture is titled "Asteroid Landed Softly" and is SUPPOSED to look like the rock is floating with the mirrors below it, but it's an epic fail. Most people call it "Potato on a stick."

Marmalade condos to be scrapped?


Being a resident of the Marmalade District, I'd be happy to see a grocery store put in place. However the thought of a chintzy strip mall is abhorrent.

Salt Lake City’s night life, job growth help garner a ranking among top college destinations

It’s official—Utah, particularly Salt Lake City, is a pretty cool place to be for college students.

The American Institute for Economic Research published the 2009-2010 College Destination Index this week, which lists Salt Lake City and Logan as two of the nation’s top destinations for college students.

“To determine the rankings, each city was assessed on the academic environment it provides, the quality of life it offers and the professional opportunities available to residents,” said Kerry Lynch, AIER senior economist.

Salt Lake City, which is home to several colleges and universities, was ranked sixth in the category of midsized cities and 21st overall in the nation.

A growing nightlife scene and events such as the annual Twilight Concert Series, gallery strolls and various events hosted at the Salt Lake City-County Building also make downtown a growing attraction for students.

“It has a lot of good public transportation, and a good area of activities for the students,” said Sagan Harlin, a senior in international studies. “It was the most liberal and diverse area in the state.”

I like this idea sooo much better!
the condos were way too over priced. This will give the area a more sugarhouse down to earth local feel.

Does it have to be condos and townhomes though?? I agree that the thought of a strip mall there is really sad. Is retail space any more in demand right now than residential space? If Howa can't make it work as condos, I wonder if he has considered apartments??

I'd rather have a vacant lot than another strip mall.

There was also an article in the Trib today about funding streams for the North Temple viaduct. It's pretty mundane tax discussion, until you get to what the city is basing it's hopes on.

The city is looking at creating a Community Development Area (CDA) around a proposed "$100 million office-and-housing development -- to be built in the northern shadow of the new viaduct by the popular restaurateur Gastronomy". The CDA would funnel property tax money away from the county and the Salt Lake school district, over the 4-8 block area. The city would also create special improvement district, to collect money through fees on local business owners. The city is looking to raise $15 million to fully fund the viaduct, and based on the Gastronomy project getting off the ground, they think they can raise more than that. Gastronomy also owns the Salt Lake Hardware building.

I believe this is the first I've heard of this Gastronomy project--$65 million for an 'office park' development, and $35 million in housing. If the city is basing revenue streams on the project, does that mean this project could be close to actually materializing? The city hopes to have commitments from the all parties in the coming weeks.

With some penny-pinching and help from nearby business owners, Salt Lake City could close the multimillion-dollar funding gap that has put the rebuild of the North Temple viaduct in jeopardy, officials say.

That's actually not a bad idea. Put billboards all along that parking garage and build a skyrise where that Carl's Jr. is located.

Now that I could get on board with. I'd love to see some static or even moving billboards on the Walker Center garage. It would be a great place to advertise for the new theater or anything in general and what better place than the Gallivan Center to get the most eye balls on those ads.

Yeah, I think that would actually look pretty cool.

Then, in 20 years someone will think it looks like blight and take it down.

Then, after another 20 years people will realize that the billboards looked cool and reconstruct them on the historic Walker Center parking garage.
