You've captured one of the things I really like about Halifax. Some of the neighbourhoods there are very colourful and have a great amount of diversity and detailing in their architecture. This city grew organically over a very long period and has something you don't find in industrial cities thrown up overnight.

The North End is basically the poorer part of town while the South End is the wealthier part (there is also a "West End" - unfortunately the names are very uncreative). Both are fairly large (15,000 people or so) and in Halifax terms are more districts than neighbourhoods.

The North End has improved dramatically in recent years. The ratio of colourful, well-kept houses to vinyl-clad wonders is slowly going up and there has been quite a bit of infill (dozens of new buildings). The area still feels a bit underpopulated but it has great urban form and is going to be very attractive if it fills out.

Nice pictures. There's a ton of wooden rowhouses and frame houses in general. I kind of expected Halifax to look like this; those wooden rowhouses look just like what you can find in other maritime cities, like Annapolis MD and New Castle DE.

Does anyone know why the houses are painted in such bright colours out east?

I think it's because they used to paint them with leftover boat paint... then it became a trend...

You'll notice that pretty much ALL the places that are sea/fishing-oriented tend to have such bright colors for their houses...

I am not sure but I certainly like the trend. Perhaps it is because the weather is so dreary for extended periods of time? I would assume the city is draped in fog much of the time???

Regardless of the reason, I am liking Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Great job, Flar! I enjoyed all of the bold and vibrant colors the facades there seem to have. And yes, I do agree that the activity in the My City Photos section has tapered and dropped off significantly. A thread of this caliber having a mere 12 replies is a rather sad, recent development.

It seems to be a trend among seafaring communities in general - certainly when traveling around Europe I've come across very similar brightly-coloured coastal homes. I don't know if there's any one reason for it but the usual explanation I've heard was that traditionally it was so fishermen could easily identify their houses when returning from a catch.

Also, is there a location source for this picture? For some reason I'm particularly intrigued by that orange and blue house on the right.

The geography of the Maritimes seems other worldly to me - I ask how can an area seem so remote and "mystical" on the east of this continent. I love any thread of this area!

Interesting that you find the Maritimes "other worldly" and mystical.
One such are in the USA, though smaller, is the San Juan Islands of Washington State, northwest of Seattle. They have a dreamy more-beautiful-than-beautiful quality about them, especially when you get a view of the Olympic Mountains of Washingtons State. Ever been there? Worth it.
