This is like when Argentinians try and persuade English-speakers that citizens of the United States should not be called "Americans". Like, OK, fine internal logic, but these things are culturally determined and the usage is in play. French people say "Anglo-Saxons".

NB is trying to racialize all English speakers. He's trying to tar us all with the same brush. At least when referring to English speakers in Canada, he should use a more neutral term like "anglo-Canadian."

Similar here. My ethnic background is Celtic (Irish), but my surname likely originated in Normandy. After winning the Battle of Hastings in 1066 in England, the Normans then invaded Ireland. Thus you do have Irish names that came from Normandy.

My parents both seriously considered Carney but in the end, voted Bloc by a hair, and so did I. Let the official record say that the difference was made by New Brisavoine’s participation on this forum.

Makes sense it would be a thing in France where the UK is still viewed from a historical lens (even if the UK has tons of ethnicities and immigrants). Makes no sense in the ‘New World’. To me it sounds like a racist, colonial old world relic.

I’m 3/4 French-Canadian. Does that make me ‘Anglo Saxon’ simply because I live in Western Canada?
