Took some pics at Rideau today. The progress is amazing. Can't wait for it to be done.

Half of the ground floor of the Bay is closed for renovations. It's about time. I hope it looks like the Eaton Centre and Yorkdale stores.

Windows are going up on the rebuilt Ogilvy builing

Expansion

The section next to Forever 21 where Shoppers will be located is coming along

Work is going on where the Exchange was located

It's like you said in the communism memorial thread, they gotta save something for future generations to do!

I ate twice at the Exchange early on, once with work downstairs and once with the wife while shopping. The place looked nice, they spent so much money renovating but the food was horrible. Does anybody know what happened? They always seemed busy to me, was it the horrible food that caught up to them and hurt their business.

Not all of the new extension is windowless based on this drawing, it seems like an electronic board or some massive artwork .

There will be windows along the street where it counts... and as mentioned above the digital artwork will animate the upper floors.

Unless you are a Microsoft fanatic, video screens ≠ windows.

Yes, after all this place is the monument to consumerism, maybe they should rebrand the Rideau Centre as the National Memorial to the Victims of Fashion. Install a multi billion-square-pixel video screen displaying flamboyant trends of decades past to remind us of the evil vanity of zoot suits, big hair and toilet seat-shaped fascinators Personally, I've been scarred by 80's fashion

I like it. A high-tech alternative to simply putting a bunch of windows up. It's something cool and innovative and futuristic... that is, if it looks like the renders.

Someone posted this a few months ago. Gives you an idea of what the art work will be like:

That will not be a video screen. Bylaws forbid large video screens in Ottawa. The Convention Shaw Centre couldn't get their little sign approved, Ikea had to fight for their little sign...there's no way Rideau Centre would get one this big without a fight.

The by-law is great in some areas, but not in others where you want to animate the night and draw people in (Think Dundas). The city should look on a case by case basis, IKEA is nowhere near a house, so there should have been no reason to deny it. The Rideau Center is in the hub of downtown, precisely where signs like this should be. Maybe, dare I say, make Ottawa a little less... boring?

Wait!! Will somebody think of the children sleeping in 90 George!

- Sincerely,

90 George Resident

...

All kidding aside, there need to be flexibility in all by-laws, to allow for the creation, development, and building of unique and distinctly (purpose) built areas/neighborhoods...

"We're attempting to codify what a building should be as opposed to what a city should be" - Peter Clewes... Further stating.. Toronto (like most Canadian/US cities) is exempting itself from regulating its own fate.

Due to ill-advised, city-wide by-laws, usually enacted by NIMBYs...

The phrase "NIMBY" is used way too often on these boards. Honestly what's wrong with people having some say over what goes on next door to them and the general environment they live in? I don't know much about this electronic sign thing, so I don't know whether it is a problem or not, but let's not just condemn people with this silly NIMBY label.

The problem becomes when those people start to claim space beyond their backyard. When they impede the ability of the majority to do something for the betterment of everyone. This happens way too frequently in Ottawa.

Seriously, a digital wall board in our shopping district is 'too flashy' and 'distracting'?

Yeah I hear you. Ottawa might need a bit more flexibility in its policies as well. I could see a digital screen being a problem if it was really big, really bright, and facing directly towards a residential building.

Sometimes you can't trust the majority to "do something for the betterment of everyone". Often, it's a minority insisting that there is a better way.
