With so much $$$ floating around Edmonton, it seems the hotels in the city don't NEED our business, so we're stuck taking what we can get, namely a couple of "hotels" in Nisku.

Hmm! I cannot see the Cozumel service on the Air Canada Vacations schedule, nor can I find it in their booking website. Perhaps they are reducing Edmonton flights to the Wednesday Cancun flight only (15 weeks in total for the winter). I may be wrong.

On the other hand, I believe the 6 flights a week this summer to Mexico from Transat(Canjet), Sunwing, and Westjet are more than we have had in previous summers.

Yes, thanks hilman. I had seen that in the original post. Today, however, I cannot see any trace of it on the Air Canada Vacations site here:

It surely surprises no one that they can announce new services with much fanfare and delete them silently.

I suppose there is still time for further changes to the winter schedule.

Yeah looks like the CZM flight is gone. It definitely was showing up in OAG, Amadeus and AC websites prior to last week.

I think this summer there are only 5 weekly YEG - Mexico (not 6 - correct me if I am wrong). Last summer there were only 4.

Canjet - 1 weekly to CUN and 1 weekly to PVR
Westjet - 1 weekly to CUN and 1 weekly to PVR
Sunwing - 1 weekly to CUN

I believe it is five or six depending on the month. During July and August the Transat/Nolitours bunch (Canjet) have a second Cancun service listed.

The Puerto Vallarta and the second Cancun service from the Transat mob was only put on at the last minute in, I think, June. I wish they would not do this, since there was no time to sell the packages when they were only opened for sale the week before the first flight. This gives the operators a ready excuse to cancel it next time because of "poor response".

Just my opinion.

Where a few years ago, I would've scoffed at 4%, I'll gladly take that now. I gotta say I'm sort of impressed given there's been almost no flight additions in the last couple of years. Keep 'er goin' EIA, and look on the bright side, you could be doing as poorly as YYC

While passenger growth at Edmonton International Airport appears to have stalled, the reality is a much rosier picture, officials say.

Statistics Canada's latest survey of Canada's top 50 airports found that Edmonton's airport passenger tally grew by barely 10,000 last year to almost six million. Airport traffic at Calgary grew at a faster clip, increasing by 135,000 to almost 11.8 million passengers during the same period.

However, the Edmonton airport's own figures show that almost 6.1 million passengers arrived and departed. The airport's tally is higher partly because Statistics Canada does not count "non-revenue" passengers such as flight crews and infants...

With EIA gettting hammered in the press for its dismal numbers and the continued idiotic actions of Envision Edmonton ongoing I noticed that Air Transat has introduced more service to Calgary. Correct me if I am wrong but this may be new service.

Calgary – London Gatwick Winter service operates twice weekly with airTransat A330 aircraft
Calgary – Manchester UK Winter service operates from 13DEC11, twice weekly airTransat A330 aircraft

But since Calgary and Edmonton apparently count using different models (doesn't Calgary count connecting flyers twice, and Edmonton only once?), which version does Statscan use?

They further elaborate on another page:

The data presented in this publication are broken down into three categories: domestic, transborder and other international. The data are assigned to the categories for each flight segment according to the next stop (for departures) and the last stop (for arrivals) of the aircraft. For example, consider a flight with a routing of Vancouver-Edmonton-Amsterdam. The departure of the flight from Vancouver would be considered domestic, as would the arrival at Edmonton. The departure of the flight from Edmonton for Amsterdam would be considered as other international since the next stop of the aircraft is a foreign point.

In reality we know roughly that Calgary's numbers are twice as large as ours. And with announcements like this morning by Air Transat the gap will only get wider.

But what really bugs me is that the people most complaining about Edmonton's stagnant growth and subsequent Calgary growth are probably the first ones who fly through Calgary.
