Lots of firms here use sketchup, its more then acceptable for most general rendering purposes.

Out of curiosity does anybody watch the show Vertical City? It's on one of those HD channels (oasis?). Basically it's narrated by an architect that visits a significant tower and goes behind the scene and talks to the original developer/architect/owner/ to get their two cents. It has really helped me understand and appreciate some of the subtleties in design.

The episode on the Seagram Building in new york blew my mind.

all they need is a free rendering program like v-ray or IDX, its not rocket science. They can take shit (tricorp rendering) and make them look very presentable in less than 5 minutes. I really cant believe firms here dont use them.

Cool. I have Channel 4 in my cable package here. I will have to check it out.

BBC World used to play a program on architecture called Dream Spaces. It was hosted by the chick from the band Elastica and was pretty interesting.

all true enough i suppose - except it does blur the lines an awful lot between design and design development and marketing which are not the same things... my own preference is the old fashioned sketchup - done with pencil and wide pen where the designer had to be able to draw which in itself forces "out of the box" thinking and creativity a lot more than using a mouse.

a construction worker told me the new crane was for the parkade only. And no, i didn't walk up to the site and ask what they were doing haha - it just randomly happened at work.

it'd be nice if the powerplant expansion needed another crane or two.
