Look at every city in the western world. They all have sprawl at their periphery. My point was Calgary has suburbia mere blocks from it's downtown, Toronto has several kms separating it.

If I were a mod, I would keep the rules simple...post pics or positive comments only, otherwise don't bother posting in this thread...delete all negative comments because really there is nothing gained from them, at least for a photos oriented thread.

Well I'm glad you are not a mod then. I'm not saying I enjoy all the silly childish back and forth, but I think I would enjoy this forum even less if only positive things were allowed to be posted and everything else was deleted.

Wait my post is sounding kind of negative, in the scenario you just described this would have to be deleted.

Why do people think Calgary goes from skyscrapers to single family houses immediately? Has anyone commenting on this even been there? I was there 2 weeks ago and I found the downtown's periphery to be pretty much like any other major city I have lived in.

Think Inglewood, belt line, and the parts near the greyhound station along the westbound LRT.

To say Calgary has no density outside of it's core is ridiculous and anyone saying such a thing is being dishonest with themselves.

Frankly it's not as well developed and integrated as Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal (I can scream the praises about Vancouver's density outside of the core all day long), but it's also half the size of Vancouver and nearly 1/4th the size of Montreal. It's an extremely unfair comparison.

This is about skylines only and frankly, I find Calgary's skyline extremely appealing and would rank it Second in Canada after Toronto, Vancouver is third and Montreal is 4th. My reasoning for the low Montreal ranking is due to the fact the skyline is overall unappealing to me.

I'd also like to echo the view that the BOW isn't a very nice building, it's WAY too bulky and the area it's located in does not help the preconceived suburban feel of the areas immediately outside of the core.

With increasing beltline density and the expanding influence west and eastward, it keeps getting better every year.

This is coming from someone who 2 years ago hated everything to do with Alberta yet I was extremely impressed with Calgary and I will defend it if need be.

Anyways this is a skyline thread so I shall post a skyline shot of Vancouver and Calgary.

Exactly. We have Mission, Cliff Bungalo, Lower Mount Royal, Sunalta, Kensington (Sunnyside and Hillhurst), Centre Street, Inglewood, and Ramsay all literally surrounding the downtown/beltline city core. Anyone who thinks we go directly into suburbia outside of downtown has no clue what they're even talking about. Beyond those neighbourhoods lie many others with densities of 2000 - 5000/km2 (hardly suburban density) ringing downtown such as Mount Pleasant, Altadore, South Calgary, West Hillhurst, Renfrew, Rosedale, Bankview, Kilarney, Erlton, Windsor Park, Richmond, Scarboro, Parkdale, Crescent Heights, Tuxedo Park, Hounsfield/Briar Hill, etc... Maybe read something about what you're talking about first before barfing out words on the internet.

Read between the lines a little guys. Nobody actually thinks it's an instant transition but it is without doubt a short one. It's a small, young city that boomed post war. It's the reality of the situation.

LMAO! Just read through the comments from today. So Montrealer's are pissed about Calgary's "Our airport is busier than Montreal's" attitude? Uhmm, I'm pretty sure all that has been posted about it is something like "oh cool, our airport has higher ridership than YUL now, neat!" which was a comment echoed by many forumers on the airport thread, not just Calgarians. I feel like you guys just can't stand to have any city be better at anything than Montreal is. That's why you used to constantly pick on Toronto and its "inferior" urban realm on here, that's why you used to constantly pick on Vancouver for its small population and "inferior" transit, or whatever other bullshit could be conjured up in argument about how any city is less than. Now Calgary is the whipping boy even when not making any slights against the city of Montreal. Anything posted positively about Calgary has to be followed up by a negative comment by a Montrealer or Ottawan nowadays. The fact that none of us do that to you guys should pretty clearly spell out why we get defensive when you come out with that horse shit. Get over it, Calgary IS a young upstart that punches way above its weight in many aspect, we ARE growing way faster than most other major North American cities, and our presence on the national stage IS getting more pronounced. None of your negativity or constant hate towards the city is going to change that, so deal with it and move on like you did with Toronto and Vancouver. We're not going to stop posting. In fact, your constant hate towards my city is part of the reason I post so much positivity about it. You're feeding your own fire. Make your choice and hopefully realize that a compliment for Calgary doesn't = an insult for Montreal, it's just a compliment until you turn it into an argument about why that compliment shouldn't have been given to Calgary.

Hey, If you are not happy with the behaviour of some forumers, why don't you communicate directly with them instead of polluting this thread? Or maybe post in the parody thread. That would be a nice change to see thing being posted there that are not directed at you for once.

Beautiful shot TransCanada! But wait, there are SFH's in the foreground... Calgary must still be a backwater.

What I don't like about the Calgary skyline is that its surrounded by lowrise/houses. I prefer skyscrapers popping out of an urban jungle. That's why I'll take a Boston or Philadelphia over Houston any day.

I actually thought you were joking in light of my comment right before yours, but you actually seem serious. Well I called it then didn't I? Just so you're aware that picture looks like it was taken from near COP which is easily 10-15 kms away from DT.

LOL you need to take a break from the internet man. Seriously. And stop saying "us, we, you guys". Stop generalizing Calgary and Montreal posters. Its really just you and that GS guy from Montreal. Maybe 1-2 others I'm forgetting.

No sorry I wasn't referring to your comment or your photo. I guess my comment was late but was just a general comment regarding the Calgary skyline which was being talked about. Trust me, I realize those houses are nowhere near the core.
