Why do people think Calgary goes from skyscrapers to single family houses immediately? Has anyone commenting on this even been there? I was there 2 weeks ago and I found the downtown's periphery to be pretty much like any other major city I have lived in.
Think Inglewood, belt line, and the parts near the greyhound station along the westbound LRT.
To say Calgary has no density outside of it's core is ridiculous and anyone saying such a thing is being dishonest with themselves.
Frankly it's not as well developed and integrated as Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal (I can scream the praises about Vancouver's density outside of the core all day long), but it's also half the size of Vancouver and nearly 1/4th the size of Montreal. It's an extremely unfair comparison.
This is about skylines only and frankly, I find Calgary's skyline extremely appealing and would rank it Second in Canada after Toronto, Vancouver is third and Montreal is 4th. My reasoning for the low Montreal ranking is due to the fact the skyline is overall unappealing to me.
I'd also like to echo the view that the BOW isn't a very nice building, it's WAY too bulky and the area it's located in does not help the preconceived suburban feel of the areas immediately outside of the core.
With increasing beltline density and the expanding influence west and eastward, it keeps getting better every year.
This is coming from someone who 2 years ago hated everything to do with Alberta yet I was extremely impressed with Calgary and I will defend it if need be.
Anyways this is a skyline thread so I shall post a skyline shot of Vancouver and Calgary.
