Okay, I think we're all on the same page here.

To a Montrealer, Calgary's downtown feels "tall but small". (His observation.)
To a Calgarian, Los Angeles' downtown feels "tall but small". (Your observation.)
To a Montrealer, Los Angeles' downtown feels "tall but small". (My observation.)

If you can understand this then I don't see how you could find his observation laughable, because you've been making it too. All you were missing was a forumer from LA saying "wait, someone from Calgary saying that our downtown is small, are you f'in kidding me?!?"

Same here! I have never said Calgary is this Calgary is that... I said MANY times it has an amazing skyline for a city its size... it only keeps getting bigger and bigger... but when bashing MTL and please I have seen it myself.. and comparing cities like Calgary to MTL is insane... anyway.. it is not all Calgarians that bash MTL. Calgary certainly beats many many North American cities in terms of skyline. Imagine Calgary in 30 years from now... it'll be insane.

It's that "oh wow Calgary's Airport is now busier than Montreal" "oh wow unbelievable that Calgary's downtown is now bigger than Montreal's" attitude that I hate. You simply cannot compare a city of 1.2M with a city of 4M in terms of size... That's just being unreasonable.

I think I figured it out! Calgarians find Montrealers condescending and Montrealers find Calgarians obnoxious.

May I point out that this "argument" started precisely because someone from one of those oldest cities in the east observed that the fact that large cluster of tall buildings was surrounded by a spread out suburbia made that downtown look small in area, in shots from above, in comparison to the downtowns of those oldest cities in the east? Seems that it's settled if you agree now...

You're right it's apples and oranges. However based on the skyline focus of this site (geared heavily towards height and new buildings) the two can absolutely be compared. It's not stealing Montreal's status or history or whatever...

That is true. However, you have to admit that omitting Montreal from a discussion about best canadian skylines is beyond ridiculous.

I'll agree with that. Let it be pointed out though that it was not a Calgarian who made that assertion.

The river and the electric turquoise towers aren't that green in real life. Its some sort of camera filter. Great effect tho.

I have seen the river that green before, just not usually at this time of year. In the spring it's that colour.

This is not at all true of Toronto. Toronto is rung by large pre war neighbourhoods and retail strips.

There are also highrise clusters all over the city.

To say so proves to me you have not ever actually walked or taken the train through the CBD.

The centre of our city is a veritable hive of activity throughout the week with a hustle and bustle no city in North America of just over a million people can even compare to. In fact we destroy city's multiple times our size for that. Just look at the stats for highest lrt ridership on the continent and you'll get the picture.

Edit: also let it be known we have no highway running into our DT like is pictured in this photo. This is one of the biggest reasons for theirs feeling so dead.
Those pics don't really show the large, historic part of downtown LA. It's actually quite substantial beyond the modern towers of the financial district.

We also went by Japan town and by city hall. Those areas were nicer than the immediate CBD but still relatively empty. This was during a weekday too.

^ DTLA has huge dead parts. It's like a mix of 80s pomo corporate towers along with a bunch of pre-gentrification Manhattan. There are a lot of architectural gems but really... you'd be hard pressed to find a city that big with a downtown less dynamic and more neglected than LA's.

LA is undeniably bigger and taller as skylines go, but the difference is that LA has a pitiful downtown for a city of its size, while Calgary's is incredible for a North American city of about 1 million.

And yet, despite being less than one-third the size of Montreal, Calgary manages to best it in many respects. You have to accept this.

lio45, stop posting about Calgary, it's making you look like an imbecile.
