I'm not much of an aviation expert and have a question. What is meant by O&D? If Calgary to Beijing is 25,000 O&D, does that mean that 25,000 per year travel between the two cities as the point of departure and the end destination?

Im no expert either but yes you're correct O & D doesn't include those flying to Calgary to catch this flight and those who go on beyond Beijing to their eventual destination.

Thanks! That's what I figured. So here's the next question.

If the Calgary to Beijing route was active, would Calgary pick up traffic from other cities like Red Deer, Edmonton, Regina, etc... as well as other cities in China at the other end? And if so, those numbers would not change the O&D stats between the two cities but they might affect the amount of passengers for the flights correct?

Yes I believe you are correct again.

Hence why HU needs to time its flight properly and codeshare with an airline at YYC that provides onward feed, namely WS.

100% agree, with flight timing probably the most crucial.

My thoughts on HU comming to town......

While I really like the concept of a new tail, makes for good spotting, I would have preferred an airline belonging to a major alliance. We are beholden to Star in this city, much more so than the other big Canadian cities.

I don't like HU track record, both for applying for route rights and then not flying them, and for being disruptive to the incumbent airlines (flying route at a loss, moving around the schedule, then dropping the route once financial picture fails to materialize).

My preference would be for AC to fly the route with 788 equipment. This strnegthens YYC as the hub and not spoke to someone else's hub.

Lack of feed on both ends of the HU route could be a killer. AC flying the route makes for better connections on both ends.

Like others, I'm not holding my breath for commercially viable flight times. Again this is another instance where AC/CA would be better.

My only hope is that HU does not destroy our chances for An AC flight on the same route.

Saw this, thought it was cool. I wasn't working that night, though.

Your thoughts are exactly what frequent flyer passengers think, but unfortunately the reality is the opposite: (1) AC thinks differently; they wants to maximize the pricing power by protecting their routes, most likely conspiring Air China and United, to consolidate the West Coast to PEK routes. (2) Hainan, non-allied carrier, can not break into PEK-YVR route, so their strategy is to play spoiler role and try to siphon away passengers from YVR-PEK route. They have to try it to see it works or not. (3) the city of Calgary or the airport may even have promised some benefits to Hainan Air.

AC was considering YYC-PEK route, as a supplementary traffic, except there is no slot, then the oil industry had collapsed, business travelers are disappearing (investment bankers and oil executives from China are no longer coming to YYC), so with Hainan making this first move, the chance of AC launching YYC-PEK is now almost next to zero.

The only thing is that there might be some fare/pricing pressures to AC for flyers originating Calgary to Beijing due to Hainan's flight, if it happens. I could expect to benefit it.

That's kind of what I had figured, but not being an expert and all, I deferred to the experts.

As mentioned before, I'm no expert, but my thoughts are this. If it is indeed viable and is successful, then so be it. If it isn't it will be because the connections weren't good enough at either end, or the time slots weren't good enough. There will still be the opportunity to get an AC-CA flight.

Trudeau formally commits to dropping the Visa requirement for Mexicans. Could this lead to AB-Mexico service again from a Mexican carrier?

They're servicing a large amount of land between the runways. I'm assuming this is for a new logistics park? Any renderings?

Integra Air adding Cranbrook

Effective 14 December Integra Air is adding YYC-YXC.

Flights will operate 9 times per week.

http://www.integraair.com/calgary-cranbrook/

This will complement Integra's recently added flights to Bonnyville with 8 flights per week.
