Lack of feed on both ends of the HU route could be a killer. AC flying the route makes for better connections on both ends.
Like others, I'm not holding my breath for commercially viable flight times. Again this is another instance where AC/CA would be better.
My only hope is that HU does not destroy our chances for An AC flight on the same route.

Your thoughts are exactly what frequent flyer passengers think, but unfortunately the reality is the opposite: (1) AC thinks differently; they wants to maximize the pricing power by protecting their routes, most likely conspiring Air China and United, to consolidate the West Coast to PEK routes. (2) Hainan, non-allied carrier, can not break into PEK-YVR route, so their strategy is to play spoiler role and try to siphon away passengers from YVR-PEK route. They have to try it to see it works or not. (3) the city of Calgary or the airport may even have promised some benefits to Hainan Air.
AC was considering YYC-PEK route, as a supplementary traffic, except there is no slot, then the oil industry had collapsed, business travelers are disappearing (investment bankers and oil executives from China are no longer coming to YYC), so with Hainan making this first move, the chance of AC launching YYC-PEK is now almost next to zero.
The only thing is that there might be some fare/pricing pressures to AC for flyers originating Calgary to Beijing due to Hainan's flight, if it happens. I could expect to benefit it.
