Philadelphia's first Michelin travel guide awards 'stars' to Museum of Art, other local attractions
Quote:
Michelin has created its first Philadelphia guidebook in partnership with the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, generating greater recognition for local museums and other tourist attractions and potentially paving the way for the city's first Michelin-starred restaurants and hotels.
Philadelphia’s Michelin Green Guide is an overview of the city and its surrounding counties that awards "star" ratings to different facets of the region's tourism experience, including the overall destination, the neighborhoods and the museums. Independence National Historical Park, the Barnes Foundation, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Nemours Estate and Winterthur are among the attractions that have been given three stars, the highest possible ranking.
The full list of Philadelphia star recipients will be announced by Michelin Green Guide editor-in-chief Philippe Orain at a local press conference on May 18. Michelin released the French version of the guide in France, Switzerland and Belgium in March, and the English-language version will be available starting in June.
These stars are different than the ratings given to restaurants and hotels in Michelin's Red Guide, which are considered some of the most prestigious recognitions in the hospitality industry. In the Green Guide, editors’ favorite restaurants are designated in the guidebook with hearts, but will not receive stars.
Philadelphia does not currently have a Red Guide and therefore does not have any Michelin-starred restaurants or hotels. Convention and Visitors Bureau director of content Robin Bloom said the organization hopes that the creation of this guidebook will lead to a Red Guide for Philadelphia since the two are "cousins." Michelin would have to approach the Convention and Visitors Bureau first with interest in creating a Red Guide for that to happen, Bloom added.
The U.S. cities that have Red Guides — New York, Washington D.C., Chicago and San Francisco — all have Green Guides as well.
Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Gregg Caren said in a statement that the organization believes the guide will also help draw more visitors to Philadelphia and that it is a result of the destination marketing organization's work to promote the city to overseas visitors. Michelin initially approached the Convention and Visitors Bureau about teaming up to create the guidebook.
The tourism organization also invested in the project, although Bloom declined to provide the amount.
In a statement, Orain called the city “an essential gateway for a trip to the East Coast.”
"Philadelphia is a condensed version of today's America: a historic city turned towards the future. It will entice you thanks to its old neighborhoods rich with incredible restaurants, its museums of unbelievable culture and its glittering skyscrapers,” he said.
The guidebook calls Philadelphia the “Frenchest American city” and says it provides “the perfect compromise between American excess and European spirit.”
