As cool as some of the new towers have been in Vancouver, there's a trending softness in the aesthetic that IMO doesn't jive with our stark skies (ie Butterfly, 320 Granville, 601 W Hastings, One Pacific, ARC, Kengo Kuma, even the Bjarke Ingels tower)

I miss the days of Shaw Tower, Shangri-la, Cielo, Flatiron, the Mark, Elan, etc

I spent years studying and working in this neighborhood.

Toronto's likely candidate for most filmed location is a Deco era water treatment plant.

If you haven't seen this before than you don't watch enough English North American film and tv!

That would be St. James Town, which at 60,000/sqkm is twice the density of Shaughnessy Village.

I stand corrected. And it looks as though some other districts in DT Toronto have also eclipsed Shaughnessy Village (no doubt with the insane condo boom in Toronto)

Urban living: Canada’s 10 densest neighbourhoods
Census tract Where’s that? People per square km
1 5350065.02 Toronto: East downtown, St. Jamestown 82,434
2 5350063.03 Toronto: East downtown, Bloor/Church 54,647
3 5350062.01 Toronto: East downtown, Bay/Charles 52,388
4 5350307.06 Toronto: Yonge and Sheppard 52,054
5 4620065.01 Montreal: Sherbrooke/rue Guy 50,278

St James is nowhere near as interesting as Shaughnessy Village though.

Shouldn't the Fort York/ Railways lands should be denser than St Jamestown? The built densities are higher. The number of people per unit has been trending upwards for years.

What's the closest thing to a view like this in the U.S.? Just curious.

Looks slightly reminiscent to Stuyvesant Town in NYC with the commie-block, tower in the park style highrises. Also slight similarities to Waikiki Beach area of Honolulu.

I'd guess the Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago or Pruett-Igoe in St. Louis, although I'm not sure if either of those still exist.

TV must have ruined my imagination. Ii doesn't look anything like a US housing project. The buildings have individual styles with front doors facing through streets. Pruitt-Igoe which has been a weed lot for decades was 30 identical 11 storey slab towers positioned in rows within a tower in a park super block.

I find it a mix of Eastern European and North American student housing. The Eastern European is the more colourful, exotic architecture while the beige stucco and faux split faced stone is mass market student housing.
