Great lighting and icy cold mood in that Edmonton river pic, nice

Did a fair bit of photography in January, posting some of the skylines one here and will post others in the photo thread tomorrow. Also I noticed when I accidentally opened up the Apple Maps app (does anyone use that?!) that they have added 3D satellite pics for Victoria and they are very recent. Looking at the construction sites only a few months old, cool. The quality is somewhat terrible, but nice to get a better aerial view of the skyline that is up to date as Google hasn’t updated there imagery in several years for Victoria.

From what I can tell Victoria, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto now all have 3D satellite imagery in Apple Maps. Hopefully they add more cities soon and improve the quality.

My pics to start, taking on the Johnson Street bridge looking across to Dockside Green development and the Point Hope Shipyard.

Now some Apple Maps 3D shots. Should be a huge increase in density within Victoria based on approved proposals in place, and a new city council that no longer seems determined to limit height below 20 storeys, combined with the fact they’ve just upzoned every lot in the city to allow 6 units.

Old school apartment density!

Lastly image of the monstrous UVic residence buildings completed this fall - UVic is located in the top middle of the bottom picture, just up the hill from Cadboro Bay Beach. I had a few beach parties then during the university days, much to the chagrin of neighbours..

It's in photos like this that we see the cities and skylines more objectively, in different and more comprehensive ways, unless we happen to have a good vantage point. Our perception and reality are usually only what we see at street level. I often drive or walk downtown but rarely can take in a whole building visually other than the first couple of floors.

It's probably not a coincidence. Good designers mst look at everything and skillfully take cues from the surroundings. Ones that don't arguably seem to fail.

Downtown Kitchener - around the Kaufman Lofts (former shoe factory designed by Albert Kahn - 1908)

Some things to look at:
Excavation site on the left for 45-storey TEK Tower.
Right beside, there's buzz of a 50+ storey project for the blue & yellow building 417 King St West https://vanmardevelopments.com/417-king-st-w/
The 2 taller glass towers on the right are part of the 5-building Station Park project https://vanmardevelopments.com/station-park/
The wide glass building on the right is Google https://perimeterdevelopment.com/the-breithaupt-block/
Looking down the railway tracks, one sees another Albert Kahn designed factory, the Dominion Tire Plant 1919. If anyone has a billion dollars laying around it could be a cool redevelopment project. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Tire_Plant

KW is moving up. Still too gappy (like her sister down the 401, London), but getting better all the time.

I've seen this stock photo show up a few times on CTV articles online and I thought I'd share it. I really like the angle and its layers. After decades of stagnation, our western skyline is seeing a ton of activity....and eventually an NHL rink and a new tallest (maybe )

Cool shots of Victoria, impressive amount of mid rise/low rise buildings throughout the area in and around downtown.

For sure, Victoria's density is impressive. Even better when you're there, seeing the towers all around the harbour and up the hill.

/\ ah, outdoor skating - rub it in..

Cool pictures of Kelowna and Kitchener - it feels like these two cities are the ones in Canada where we’ll see the greatest transformation in the next two decades in terms of where they are today. Any other contenders? Perhaps Hamilton or Ottawa? I know Toronto will likely add more square footage than all Canadian cities combined (excluding Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and perhaps Edmonton) but will it be noticeably larger/more dense than it is now? Canadian cities outside of the big three really need to greatly increase density so it’s an exciting time despite the common urban challenges across the country.

Halifax is an interesting place too. Lots of growth right now and for the most part building up rather than out. It already punches above its weight in many area but I think it will only shine more in the future. The big thing I see holding us back is transportation but maybe that'll change some day.

Perhaps transportation challenges could be leveraged to further increase density and livability within the core?

Similar story here in Victoria, where I can't foresee light rail/rapid transit in the next decade - perhaps even two decades. In the meantime the main western suburb of Langford is beginning to build up and the City of Victoria (only one of 13 municipalities in greater Victoria with a small land area) now seems hellbent on solving the housing crisis and urban sprawl all by themselves. A missing middle initiative passed rezoning the entire city to sixplexes.

It's it possible that for smaller to mid sized cities that are better off not having rapid transit until they get closer to the one million mark in order to 'force' greater density, more 15 minute communities and self reliance/sustainability of suburbs? At some point it'll be necessary of course. Increased/improved movement of people, goods and services leads to economic growth, but does it create inefficiencies as well?

I recently visited a friend who lives just north of downtown London. While I didn't get into the core itself, this is exactly the impression I got. I hope to see that change.

And I may be interested in a reasonably priced getaway later this year, and Victoria seems to look like an option!

For a minute, I thought you were going to say "London" and I would have been like....well, no, there is little to do/see here (perfectly fine to live in, but I wouldn't want to visit here).

I'd like to see it anyway. May just take some day trips. Kitchener, Waterloo, London, Windsor (which I know well, but she's changed), Niagara (ditto), others... Nothing like getting out on foot and exploring.

But farther afield, I may plan visits to Victoria, Montreal (always a favourite!), Quebec, Ottawa (yet again), east coast cities... need to see what the budget will allow.
