BREAKING: Regional transit in Edmonton is dead.

Council voted tonight not to pay for the 1st phase, effectively killing the regional transit commission. Municipalities signed on with the condition that Edmonton will participate. #yeg #yegcc #yegbudget
I'm surprised by this too. My sources suggest that transit unions were strongly opposed to the plan and it died shortly.

What you are missing is your UCP government not providing any money for the regional transit, and Edmonton paying for it all.

Yup, if the Province stepped in to organize, manage and fund a regional transit system like Metrolinx or Translink it would've worked for sure, but they don't care about transit, so we won't see anything like that under a UCP government.

Why would the City lure in surrounding municipalities with a promise that was entirely dependent on provincial buy-in without explaining that contingency? Something doesn't quite sound right about that.

Did Sohi have a plan with Kenney's ministries that evaporated when the other person took control of the government?

Your questions is why would the Regional Transportation board do so, not the ETS...

The province has "balanced" the books at the expense of Edmonton and Calgary on many fronts. This is just one of them.

Why should Edmonton pay for the majority of the costs to service communities outside its jurisdiction ?

So the entire project was dependent on provincial financing but nobody mentioned it until a few weeks ago? Here's an article from May of last year. There are concerns mentioned (service levels, affordability) but not a peep about the UCP or external financing.

https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-n...se-out-if-regional-transit-plan-proceeds

Council jumped the gun before doing the arithmetic and then pulled the rug out on the 'burbs because they didn't have the support of the unions, the users, or the rate payers.

Nothing to do with the UCP at all.

Dear Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi residents, I hope you have had a restful holiday season and some quality time to spend with family, friends, and neighbours.

Following a number of my community engagement events including two public town halls in May and September of 2022, where the LRT extension project was discussed, I have been working with the city’s executive leadership and LRT project team to address a variety of concerns I heard from our ward residents.

As promised, I am providing a number of updates related to the Capital Line LRT South Extension project after having spent some time working through the issues. Some of these updates have been provided in person to select property owners along the LRT corridor in October 2022, also at the October 2022 Twin Brooks Community League AGM, and at a few other in-person community meetings in November. These updates have the latest information and cover the following topics:

1. Fence materials adjacent to the LRT corridor
2. Updated noise study
3. Emergency access for Twin Brooks
4. Twin Brooks station (and follow-up survey)
5. LRT petition (community entrance features, fence materials, and multi-use trail)
6. Street Parking within Twin Brooks
7. Traffic flow in and out of Twin Brooks
8. Access to Anthony Henday Drive
9. Indigenous engagement
10. Bus service adjustment
11. Transit safety

Please see the attachment for full details.

As a follow-up to recent community engagements, an additional Capital Line South (Twin Brooks Station) LRT Survey is open until January 22, 2023. Visit http://bit.ly/3FpGLK5 to complete the survey. Alternatively, can access the survey from the LRT project website at edmonton.ca/CapitalSW.

Sincerely,
Jennifer

----

Early construction for Phase 1 began in 2022 and will continue into 2023 to start preparing the corridor, with major construction anticipated to begin in 2024 and to be completed by 2028 (subject to change).

• Future phases of the project, which are not yet funded, aim to extend Capital Line South LRT Line to the future Edmonton New Hospital in Heritage Valley (scheduled to open in approximately 2030), provide LRT access to additional neighbourhoods in Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi, and for the line to continue south to the Edmonton International Airport (EIA).

My Arc Ca

I bought an ARC card since it's become impossible to find books of bus tickets. I tried it out a few times and there are good things and bad things about it.

GOOD:

Card arrived quickly after ordering.
Easy to register and load.
No errors after a few successful trips. Not overcharged or undercharged.

BAD:

At some locations such as Corona Station it is a challenge to locate the tap units.
Transaction history output file was written by a junior developer and nobody reviewed it for legibility or formatting standards.
Terminals experience latency so you need to block others boarding or leaving the bus to ensure your card turns the LED panel green.

TransEd confirms to @CityNewsYEG that they are inspecting cracks that have appeared on at least one pillar around the Davis LRT station. It is not known at this time if it is a structural concern. The @CityofEdmonton is aware of this situation. #yeg #yegtransit #yegtraffic #CoE

i have a hard time believing the cracks that show in rod muldaner's twitter photo are “...two small non-structural surface cracks at the corners of a construction joint between two concrete pours..." per transed's statement.

the vertical cracking and spalling and exposing of rebar down the centre of the pier where the load is greatest doesn't look like non-structural expansion cracks at a re-entrant corner to me. but what do i know, i'm just a dumb developer.

I agree with the Former not the latter

I called this from day one of the Cracks being found. This is going to be an ongoing problem because they didn't fix the problem (replacing the piers that were cracked). They are just kicking the can down the road!

A concerned Materials Engineer. And Edmonton Tax payer.

Jan 1, 2024 has a nice ring to it... but at this point I hope they find some levity and go with April 1, 2023.
