I guess the inevitable question is: why keep adding components when it's already able to bore its way out of the pit? It's already doing the job, what more is needed?

And I'm guessing that the answer has something to do with handling the spoils.

Yes, you can't see Phyllis, she's already somewhere in a tunnel that she's dug, up ahead. Her trailing gear could be over 100m of gear that supports the TBM including the conveyor belt that removes all the soil excavated by the cutter-head from the tunnel. As the operating crew needs to keep the machine moving forward the trailing gear also holds supplies. There will probably be equipment to ensure a safe air supply, as there's no natural ventilation in the tunnel until she reaches a station box.

And installing the tunnel concrete liners. They said it's about 150m long (around 8 Mk2 Skytrain cars?)

Don't worry, the second machine in the pit should soon resemble the first. You could review the progression of the first in previous pic posts in this thread to see how long it takes to get to the progression of the first one, if so inclined. I'll leave that as an exercise for interested readers.

I got bored with these pit pictures a while ago as nothing much is changing, and even less once Phyllis is fully deployed.

Have the station lengths been confirmed at 80 metres? Will there be provisions for longer stations in the future?

According to https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/skytrain-broadway-extension-station-design-renderings:

Quote:
Platforms will follow the same 80-metre length standard of the Expo and Millennium lines, twice the length of most Canada Line platforms.

Ok thanks.

The Broadway subway is different from the the rest of the Skytrain system, which serves lower density suburbs. The Broadway subway is much more urban and will serve much higher density neighbourhoods. With coming developments around the stations, that density will get much higher very quickly, so it would be very wise to build in the option to lengthen the stations at a future date. If they try and lengthen the stations later on, it will be very costly.

If it's (let's say) 100m on the Broadway extension, it'd have to be 100m throughout the whole line - you don't want train doors which open onto nothing once you reach VCC-Clark.

Yes, but if the Broadway stations started off longer to begin with, you can run the current "short" trains without a hitch while you work to extend the platforms on the rest of the M-Line. Those stations are all above ground so I imagine it's not too hard to extend the platforms, unlike the underground ones under Broadway.

Remember that currently 2-car trains on the line. It's going to be a very long time before >5-car trains are required.

Sure the Arbutus extension will open with 4 (or 6 Mk1) car trains?

Agreed, I find it very hard to believe that Millennium Line trains down Broadway will stay with 2 car trains for long.

officially, they're 82.5m with NO provisions for extension.

personally i think this is short sighted. i would have liked to have seen 100m station platforms, or the ability to extend them to 100m.

Broadway is the 2nd biggest employment centre, after downtown, and before the 3rd which is UBC; it'll be busy. even if they dont need the length *now* i don't see how easy it'll be to fix later...

Wouldn't they have to expand all the other stations along the line if they had longer platforms for Broadway?

When the rest of the line has only 80m platforms, there's no point in going beyond that for the extensions.

In the case for the M-line specifically, they didn't plan for any extension into the future most likely because that would involve rebuilding Lougheed Station, whose layout does not allow for any extension.

Couldn't the north-western end of the station be extended? You'd have to demolish and rebuild some switches and all the track, sure, but it seems feasible.

only when they need to run longer trains would it be an issue. at one point no one thought we would need longer trains for the Expo-Line, and yet they are talking about extending platforms.

it seems shortsighted to me to not even build in the future possibility to do it. with a UG station, it will be extremely difficult to extend them if one day they decide to extend other ones. this system will exist for over a century. do we really think in 100yrs that the Broadway Corridor, 2nd biggest employment centre, might not need longer platforms? is this a bet we are making? it appears so. i think it is short sighted. but only time will tell.
