I mean great for you professor, you've got your entire life within biking radius and never need to go beyond it. That isn't practical and should NOT be mandatory for the entire metro.

Condon's been singing the same tired old song since at least 2010, but doesn't seem to realize that nobody except his two dozen cultists and desperate West Side NIMBYs is listening anymore - everybody else wants SkyTrain.

Light rail does get an advantage when it's on an old train corridor that's partly-separated from the road network... of which Vancouver no longer has any, so he wants to run block-long trains down our busiest streets every five minutes.

I wonder if the UBC extension will include an OMC.

... Where would they put it? Not a loaded question, I genuinely don't see any room for one.

Ooh I know - we'll have a completely underground OMC. It won't cost all that much money to do...

The Expo Line repurposed the existing Dunsmuir Tunnel; perhaps the UBC extension can use the fabled "UBC tunnels" for an OMC...

Seriously, given that UBC, and Point Grey west of Alma, is an escarpment of which the western tip and UBC are part, gives rise to the question of "What's the escarpment geology?"
Is it a granite plateau - in which case forget digging - is it large boulders, strata (clay rock earth, for example, or what? If possible, I'd love to the western line there in a tunnel. With a deep station.
Escalators going deep, as at Granville Station. Lighting effects, fantastic art on the walls and in and at the station, elegant stations and platforms, ... (excuse me, just a dream sort of, but I'd love to see it anyway.)

"The next station is: Wreck Beach. Terminus Station."

It's going to be served by existing OMCs as well as a new one they are building near Lougheed Station.

Hopefully not clothing-optional between UBC and WB stations...

It's not granite. The only parts of Vancouver where that is found near the surface is around QE Park, (created from a former rock quarry) and the seastack off the edge of Stanley Park. Most of UBC is the usual grey glacial material found throughout the region, but there's also some sandstone, with a tendency to slump, sometimes fatally.

Thank you for the information. Is the sandstone risky to drill a tunnel through? Yes, I know it means more $$expense, but it would be so much more esthetic to have it underground. (IMHO)

Canada Line looks like it went through a lot of sandstone. Research paper on the performance of the TBM etc.

Given that the UBC extension is supposed to be part of year 6-10 of TransLink's 10 Year Priorities, is it fair to optimistically assume construction to begin in 2027 (year 6)?

And is there any back-of-the-envelope estimates on the number of years required until completion? I assume it would be less than the 5-6 taken by the Broadway Subway project since the remaining distance won't need to be 100% tunnelled, but perhaps having to build underground storage space for trains at UBC would counteract that...

Hey, welcome to the forum.

I'd say that any kind of ETA would be guesswork when we don't even have a fixed alignment yet. And keep in mind that even if it's not completely tunnelled, you've still got an extra km and a half more to go than VCC-Arbutus... and construction in itself often ends up years behind or ahead of schedule.

The only real question about the UBC extension is when it will be funded. Once that's resolved, it'll be full steam ahead, but not before.

True true.

More studies needed to make it look like something is happening!
