It makes sense that people on a Skyscraper forum would take issue with someone putting their feet into a perfectly good skyline shot, but I think a lot of it is taking the object of photo (the city) and making it the background to the photographer - the stunt as what we should be digesting instead of the surroundings.

It's just a cringe flex at this point but for a time it was a popular thing to do.

It's a dumb illegal act. That should bother us more than having feet obscure an amazing skyline shot.

I think it's a fair comparison. Also both home to Canada's Navy Bases. Victoria has also been growing really fast. So many people moving in but not enough new housing units on the market to accommodate them. Thus real estate is crazy expensive now. Rents have gone up 30% from a year ago too.

Minutes after I said there’s almost no such thing as “real” new members on SSP, a legit new member shows up lol. It’s just that this forum as a history of members creating alternate accounts after their old ones got banned. Anyway, I agree that’s a gorgeous shot of Montreal.

Yeah no worries I believe you man. I think I recognize your name from SSC. Haven’t been there in a long time though. The Canada subforum was always too quiet for my liking over there. It’s definitely more active here.

Interesting angle that shows how downtown Montreal was once the city's "Back Bay" (downtown was the Place d'Armes-Square Victoria axis).

^interesting and never thought about that area as a 'Back Bay', but it makes sense.

I think part of it is that it distracts from the cityscape which is the genre of photography I'm actually interested in. Not just that it distracts, but that it's actually a picture of the person rather than the city with the city just playing a supporting role which means the composition is often quite different than an image intended to feature the cityscape. As a result it seems like a wasted opportunity.

But the other thing is that it just seems so silly and immature. Like, "Hey look at me every body! Isn't this wild?? Aren't I brave?? Look!! " And I'm like "No. You're breaking the law and risking your personal safety just to ruin a perfectly good cityscape view as part of a lame and over-saturated photography trend"
All I can imagine is him splatting into the HVAC fan on the neighouring tower's roof. People who do this for pics are dumbasses. Reminds me of all the people you hear about dying while taking IG selfies near cliffs. I've seen a few of these types in person at Elbow Falls West of Calgary. Darwin Award candidates.

Very frustrating when somebody takes a good city photo but then rudely ruins it by inserting themselves.

Not sure where to post this. I was going through some old pics and found this under construction pic of One King West from Oct. 17, 2007.

I remember the hype at SSP for One King West. It was the first building over 150m/500ft to be built in Toronto in over a decade. That feels like a lifetime ago.
