Wait! Wait! I can respond to this!

That's okay, United Airlines will continue to fly to YYC-Calgary International from their main hubs DEN-Denver International, IAH-Houston Intercontinental, ORD-Chicago O'Hare and SFO-San Francisco on mainline! Even if with 319/320 it's great for Calgary!

There, how did I do?

On the side node, looks like WestJet just start to put WS code on YVR-ICN by KE starting next month. I don't remember see that before? If that's new, likely ICN is one of the destination they're looking into.

WS is also currently codesharing YVR-SYD with QF. Maybe they are also looking into SYD? Not sure how well YYC-SYD would work though...

Seems new and the first time you can fly to Asia through booking with WS. Maybe they start YYC-ICN? But I'd assume that's the only Asia route they start. We'll only really have to wait 3-4 weeks to see what happens anyways.

If that's the case, then why not just start the route? Why codeshare? WS just announced that all dreamliners will be based in YYC. Why not take the opportunity to announce a new route as well? I don't know.

I think ICN is the most plausible East Asian destination for WS, but with China still closed off, I think it's a better strategy to fly to Europe and the Middle East for now. WS needs to tap into the massively underserved Western Canada - Middle East/South Asian market, and DXB is the perfect destination for it.

I mean, nothing is impossible, but that is one long flight (13,000 km+). Even longer than YYC-DXB, and that's with the detour around Russia. Don't think SYD is on their radar, frankly. At least not anymore, with just 7 dreamliners in the plans. Plus, 2 carriers already fly from Western Canada to SYD. Why be the third wheel? Better to be the first and only wheel on another route

LOL. Quit teasing the guy. His posts are harmless.....
If anything, he goes the extra mile by stating the city name and the airport code. Now that's dedication.

Well... If they're launching 4x weekly YYC-DXB, then YYC-SYD may be the best for the other 3x weekly in term of aircraft utilization? One thing about SYD is that there is no nonstop service from Eastern Canada (or Eastern US), so it can draw people from YYZ, YHZ, YUL, JFK, ... rather than competing with nonstops for Europe or NE Asia service.

Wouldn’t you need at least 2 aircraft to do 4xDBX/3xSYD?

Yeah. If WS were to launch any sort of Asia it would either be ICN or DXB and that's it. I don't think they really want to wade too much into it, Europe will always be their focus.

It's definitely been the leading candidate around here for a while. I'd be pleasantly surprised if it were to start next summer and it seems ambitious given their desire to kinda settle into a slightly more conservative strategy next summer, but anything is possible.

You're right, and even their announcement with the GoA sounded very ambitious considering the tone they've taken about international expansion and focusing on point to point growth. So I don't really know what to expect anymore,

Looks like there's a new set of doors now to isolate gates 84, 85, 86, 87, 88 90, 91, 92, 94 and 95 from the rest of the transborder departure lounge. In the morning it swings back when all the transborder gates are required; this was introduced during covid by way of temporary barriers due to the closure of Concourse A.

Both WestJet Dreamliners to London tonight are departing from US podiums. YYC makes a lot of stupid decisions but this is actually quite clever, gives WestJet a lot of operational flexibility, and spreads out the mayhem in the int'l lounge from having 5 Dreamliners departing to Europe in a relatively short timeframe.

Passed through YYC last evening around 10pm. This time on WS connecting from Toronto to Victoria. Both flights were were in the C gates. In years past that was AC territory. It was dominated by WS.

The C gates were fine for AC when they had a mix of smaller and larger aircraft. However the terminal is just far too small with all these MAX aircraft. Passengers waiting it hall blocking access to other gates. Lack of seating, etc.

These 737 have 50-100% more seats than the Embraer's that use to dominate that terminal.

Looking at the departure board now AC and WS are all mixed up and the airport is not trying to get airlines together the way it did in the past.

The old terminal buildings are in desperate need of expansion, or modernization at the least. I know the Airport Authority has been shoving money into the terminal for a few years but they should realistically be overhauled.

Over the decades they increased the amount of space used for retail, especially in C. The wine bar use to be seating. The wine store used to be seating. If they bring some of that back as waiting areas that would be helpful.

A is 2000 ish, it's fine. D and E are obviously new and therefore fine. C was just renovated and is fine but too small because the airport has a gross obsession with shoving as many flights into gates 50-59 as possible despite other gates being available to spread the load.

It's only really Concourse B that's criminally disgusting and needs to be fixed.

Of course the entire airport is third world compared to YVR or T3 at YYZ, but once you accept the fact that YYC will always be the biggest joke of a major airport in the country it becomes easier to find things they have done correctly.

YVR is fantastic.

T3 at YYZ is on par with YYC. They both look good on paper but just don't execute well.

No way. T3 at YYZ is equal across its concourses and on par with the best part of YYC, i.e. the new international terminal.

Our Concourse B is from the 70s and hasn't changed. To say we are on par with T3 at YYZ is definitely false unless you're specifically excluding our Concourse B from the equation.

Agreed. B and C are both needing a seating expansion. Way too few seats in each gate area to accommodate the size of aircrafts now using them. What are the options? Unfortunately all that pre security space formally used as retail/restaurant space and now sitting mostly empty won’t help with this even if they did expropriate it as post security seating/retail/restaurant space.

I was in YYZ T3 earlier in the week. There is no car rental. You need to take the inter-terminal train over to T1. It basically means an extra 30 minutes if you fly WestJet instead of Air Canada. From my WestJet flight to the car rental place, I think I needed to use 3 elevators, 2 moving walkways, 6 escalators and one train. It is insane. Even San Francisco is not as bad at YYZ.

The Plaza Premium lounge in T3 is tight. Last night there was a lineup outside to get in. That "pub" style restraint next door had a line up.

The far swing gates between domestic and US are mediocre.

I arrived into T3 on a flight from Ottawa on Encore. That uses a gate at the satellite terminal. You have moving side walks and escalators. However every time I go through that there has always been at least one elevator or escalator out of service.

Arriving in T3, I had one odd size bag and one regular sized check bag. The odd sized was half out of the baggage belt. Walked over to the WestJet service counter and asked if they could get it or if I could just stand on the belt and grab it. The westjet agents were buzzed and said they would phone some one, then went back to their conversation. About 30 minutes I walked over and asked again, and they were somewhat indifferent to it, saying they called and someone will eventually show up. Finally someone from the otherwise of the wall near the belt started yelling to all of us who were waiting that there was a walker on the belt at the far end near a sensor that one of us need to take off the belt and put somewhere. Then it started moving again. For the three WestJet agents at the customer service, not one of them was even interested enough to come have a look.

Leaving YYZ, I have silver status with WS, could not find the priority baggage counter, and tried to use the kiosk. The kiosk, constantly showed messages that said that printing baggage tags from this kiosk was not supported for your airline. But they did have a WestJet agent saying to ignore the message and it would still work. However the agent was quite confused on what do when you had both a regular and oversize bag to check. At the end of the day he did say to use the baggage check machine for the first bag and then hit cancel baggage check in when it gets to the second bag. He then sent me over to an airport oversize drop off counter that was closed. There was a sign that said it was closed but to go to check in counter 3000. That would have been good information if the check-in counters had any numbers of them. They did not.

Inflight with WS was great, however I should have done that trip on AC.

The setup for Canadian to US transfers at YYZ Terminal 3 is terrible. Long un-predictable lines. I just avoid the WS in Toronto for US connections. The setup for AC is much better there.

Yes, YYC is doing much better than YYZ Terminal 3.

Twenty years ago, C had more seating. It would mean giving up on the win bar. You would expect more space at the front of B. In years past AC use to have a lounge there and there was all the space taken by US customs.

T3 car rental centre was closed for covid and remains closed. It will re-open.

I'm not grading YYZ based on T3 car rental being pandemic-closed, given that YYC's pandemic-related closures were the biggest bag of bullshit closures in the entire country. Maybe because I'm at YYC everyday and know everything that goes wrong here, far more than everyone else here, I'm better able to compare the two. I've only flown through T3 maybe 5 times this year. Maybe on the 6th trip I'll find it to be worse.

The planned option as of now is a rebuilt and expanded Concourse B.

You may recall this was the initial plan for the new international terminal, but it was deemed cost-ineffective and a greenfield design was selected instead.

Rip them down one by one and rebuild, starting with B? It'd be great if we could somehow copy and past the Intl. terminal style for the domestic.
