Translink is a government agency, so no different than any other government agency.
Lemme guess, employed by the government in some way.

Your scorn for those job holders and people who have put their money into those businesses is typical of say, city hall arrogance. And your deceptive use of the derogatory term “slave jobs” ignores the fact that it was someone’s job. Maybe it’s pay was beneath you, but it was important to someone. Maybe they were a new Canadian who didn’t have the contacts or language skill for something else. Maybe it was someone working their way through university etc.

Retired military. Prior to that, I worked a lot of those types of jobs and could never get ahead. I wised up.

Pay the person like a slave because you think they are a slave, or pay them a living wage because you think they should live too.

Interesting comment considering the events of the past 2 years.

I'm actually a bit surprised by some of the comments here. Even if you think these smaller local business are being run by parasitic owners, the flip side of this is a street where every other shop is BigBoxRetailerXYZ. I'm under the impression that most of us here would consider that to be a net loss to the cultural fabric of the city.

I said "successful enough," yes? Big-boxes 🞵🞵🞵🞵, but how many of those are on Broadway? One SportChek here, one Bed Bath & Beyond there, that's it - much of the rest is dime-a-dozen takeout joints and moneylenders and dollar stores which had a good chance of shutting down even without a pandemic or a subway. Put Anton's or Phnom Penh or Vij's in the same spot, they'll still get crazy lineups. They're that good.

Should the affected venues get a bailout? Sure. Is it surprising that so many of them are unviable without one? No. Is the city going to be lessened if Happy Currency Exchange or Pho Extreme Xe Lua goes bankrupt? Probably not.

Contract is awarded to Thales Seltrac for signalling technology on both Broadway Extension and Surrey-Langley SkyTrain

Quote:
TransLink has awarded two contracts to Thales for the provision of train control technology for their new Operations Control Centre and a new fully automated depot, Operations Maintenance Centre 4. These two new facilities are key components of the Expo and Millennium Line Upgrade Program, necessary to support SkyTrain system expansions to 2045 and beyond to better serve Metro Vancouver passengers. The system will be expanded by 22 km, from 80km to 106 km by 2028, with 41 new trains expected to be in service by the end of 2027.
must be math

I do believe 102km puts us back at #1 for Longest Driverless Transit System in the world. Dubai beat us out a few years ago at 90km.

Also break out the Champagne for breaking the 100km mark.

Least surprising news ever. What, are we supposed to expect maybe the trains would switch to different signaling tech mid-line? As if.

Actually, Singapore blows both cities out of the Park. Dubai might care about the Guiness World Record, but Singapore cares about building a 🞵🞵🞵🞵 load of automated rapid transit lines. As of today, every line in Singapore has been built with or converted to automatic signaling which adds up to 216km (!) of rail. Maybe one day we can catch up.

(Interestingly, the newly constructed Singapore MRT lines use Alstom tech for signaling, but the converted 1980s era lines use our 1980s SelTrac tech!)

Can't take 100km away from us though!

This says

Singapore 199km (adding another 43km line in 2024)
Shanghai 164km
Kuala Lumpur 114.9km
Dubai 89.6km

This number is a bit old, 17km of the Thomson–East Coast Line is open, making 216km of automated rail rapid transit.

Shoot, I thought Singapore meant fully automatic in signalling only.

The MRT's had teething issues with automation. Between 2013 and 2015, the Northeast Line had difficulty lining up with the platform doors; it'd come to a full stop about half a metre away, then very slowly drift into position. Never had that problem on the SkyTrain.

Bear in mind we don't have platform doors here.

Right, but the doors shouldn't matter if the train always stops in the correct spot.

Without platform doors the correct spot is anywhere along the platform.
