WestJet will go to Asia, it's inevitable. It's just a matter of where and when.

For the time being, I don't see an imminent return of AC's NRT run. I'd say it's more likely to come back than BA is, however... if that means anything. They continue to use YYC to prop up YVR-NRT, and boy are there are lot of pax that connect on YEG-YVR and YYC-YVR onward to NRT.

The world has changed, so I would be skeptical about those coming back, save for a big change in the world political climate. AC also seemingly has decreased interest in YYC.

Next non-Euro destination for YYC? Dubai, maybe? Given Westjet’s codeshare with Emirates, their leisure-heavy 787 config, and changing demographics of Canada, Dubai is a good transit option.

I noticed some discussion regarding Eurowings, so here's an update that was posted on Aeroroutes not so long ago.

Eurowings Discover in recent schedule update revised planned service launch on Frankfurt – Calgary route. Initially scheduled from 23MAY22, this route is now scheduled to commence on 01AUG22, until 15OCT22.

The revision also sees the airline operates 4 weekly flights, instead of 5. Reflected on Tuesday 10MAY22’s schedule update, this route will also see leased Finnair Airbus A350-900XWB aircraft operating this route, instead of A330-200/-300.

Honestly don't be too sad at the loss of these two; traffic to Asia is insanely cut off, you can't even really mention them in discussion for this summer from anywhere. Covid has decimated traffic to/from there so much it isn't even worth mentioning Asian destinations. Even for Asian strongholds like YVR and YYZ, the service to Asia is just a fainting ghost of its former self, so for YYC to not have these destinations is no surprise, and doesn't even reflect on YYC specifically. More just the generalized decrease in demand has cut everything going there.

Yeah Asia traffic will be obliterated for quite a while but I'm not ready to totally write off YYC-NRT operated by somebody in the future. It will eventually recover.

Is it an airframe issue with the B763s gone? I'm not sure how the cargo was, but would the cargo needs have changed or being fulfilled elsewhere with more cargo flights around?

I'm sure things will come back, the long term confidence in a route like that will take a while. Give it 2 pandemic free years and we'll be good!

From AC's perspective, a good airplane for the route is definitely an issue... the 767 was ~210 seats but now you're looking at a the 787-8 which is up to 255 seats and AC only has 8 of them and better uses for them. So unless AC ends up able to spare us those frames, you're looking at a 298-seat 787-9 which requires demand to be elevated a fair bit above what it was for the 767 operation.

Hmm. If their on time percentage is any good I’ll have to check them out. Every time i am tempted by Flair I remember the sea of people waiting to check in, or in the terminal with indeterminate delays

Not a ton of data points yet. Loads are worse than Flair but not terrible. We'll see how it goes when they attempt to ramp up in the summer. They claim YYZ prebookings are very good.

Well it's far lower than anyone else's inaugural out of here this year.

YYC April 2022 Stats: (First month above 1 million pax since February 2020).

Domestic: 738,301 (+279.1%) YTD: 2,380,233 +201.57%
Transborder: 202,523 (+1535.6%) YTD: 586,315 +837.46%
International: 120,181 (+4554.6%) YTD: 398,139 +ALOT.
April Total: 1,061,005 +405.9

2022 YTD: 3,364,687 +282.15%

US/International numbers so far this year have already reached what we saw in ALL of 2021.

Even if you extrapolate Q1 to the rest of year, when obviously the rest of the year will be higher, that gets you to 10M pax for 2022 which itself is probably far better than would have been expected at this time last year.

UA has finally updated their schedules for the summer and YYC will have 5 daily for most of it
DEN - 2 daily 319
ORD - 1 daily 738
IAH - 1 daily 739 (surprised reduced to only once daily)
SFO - 1 daily 319

DL will have two daily only - they have decreased MSP to once daily 321 for July/early Aug
and SLC will be once daily on an Express E75

AA will have 3 daily - 2 to DFW and 1 to ORD all on 738s

AS will have two daily DH4s to SEA

So US carriers will be flying 12 daily flights out of YYC for the bulk of the summer

I think the DL cut was mainly due to staffing issues (a couple flights from YVR and YYZ were cut too, as well as in the rest of their network)

YVR’s DL summer schedule hasn’t changed in months. Still 8 daily.

Oops, didn't realize MSP was only once daily from YVR.
But the MSP cut does seem to be related to operational issues.

IAH is the only change weren't expecting, it was a very late change. WS doing decent numbers on 11x weekly IAH undoubtedly a factor.

Edelweiss is back on Sunday, but there's still 2 different schedules in the OAG.

WK14/15 routing ZRH-YYC-ZRH as well as WK18 which is loaded as a circle route ZRH-YYC-YVR-ZRH.

WK15 has a block time of 13 hours, which seems rather off?
