Can skytrain really do those sharp corners as indicated by a future UBC extension?

Regardless, the track record on future stations and whatever else is pretty weak so far.

This is fine, expected. I hope they didn't spend too much telling us the obvious. Get the shovels out already.

I thought that first too. But let's think about it. What is the major purpose of extending the line to UBC? To get students, staff, and researchers to and from their places of learning or work.

The majority of trips will be commuters going from where they live to campus for study or work (and reverse at the end of the day). That means it is implicit to have a station near where the study/work places are. Station 1a meets that need. Anything else is an extra nice-to-have.

Having a station located in front of student residents is really an extra luxury. The majority of the daily trips will not be going from off-campus to the Westbrook residential zone. Sure, if there is a station there, then students will use it (bad weather, running late, disabilities, ...lazy?), but it's really a short walking distance across campus. In that case, as it's an extra luxiry, it would completely seem fair for UBC to pay for the extra station that drops students off right at their doorstep.

Yeah, if UBC wants an extra station, they can help fund it. They've got an annual budget of $3 billion - hardly running on charity here.

I expect UBC would fund a second station.
There is also Thunderbird Stadium out there and easy access could mean expanded use.

A recent preliminary study suggested a SkyTrain guideway reaching south campus could be built along East Mall.

UBC previously announced it is committed to providing a substantial contribution towards TransLink’s costs of constructing the SkyTrain extension.

I am sure a deal will be worked out to get a 2nd station built with UBC coughing up the ~300 million extra it would cost.

The current estimate from TransLink’s study is that a Millennium Line SkyTrain Extension to UBC would reduce GHG emissions by over 40 kilotonnes over a 25-year project lifecycle. This estimate includes embodied carbon emissions from concrete.

"Back in June 2021, when #BroadwaySubway construction began,
@broadwaysubway_ was quoted in local media saying traffic deck construction would take 6 months. Its been about 10 months so far & fall completion could mean as much as 14 months."
Yeah I guess if they dug out all the stations at the same time that might be true.

Lexus,

I'm pretty sure this thread is for the proposed line between Arbutus and UBC. The section currently under construction from VCC-Clark to Arbutus has it's own thread.

Yeah, mods, it would be great if you could please delete all the off-topic pictures that belong in the Millennium Line - Broadway Extension thread.

Thanks.

so why is Langley before this one? this is way more important than Langley.

is it just because this one is more expensive?

I'm actually not convinced this project would be that much more expensive.

About 2/3 of it must be tunneled which definitely shoots the cost up and the biggest criticism of this project I've heard is "it's a long distance to build without many stations or density to support it", but the SLS project is twice as long with twice as many stations and it even runs through ALR farmland in places. (Admittedly, Fleetwood is denser than the West Side, but UBC has almost 3x as many students as the entire population of Langley City and that's not counting staff, faculty and non-university traffic)

If they only continued the tunneling they're already doing the extra cost surely must not be that much more?

To some degree there's probably a few political games being played here. I've definitely heard comments such as "Vancouver and Burnaby get all the transit expansions while SoF municipalities get none which isn't fair" before. Vancouver-Point Grey is becoming a safe BCNDP seat and Vancouver Quadra is the safest LPC seat out there. Meanwhile, the LPC and BCNDP are both probably still looking at their seats in Surrey and Langley with discomfort and suspicion. There aren't that many political wins to be had on the Vancouver West Side for the governments in power for building the UBC extension, it's just the right thing to do.

On the other hand, there's definitely far, far greater growth potential in Fleetwood, Cloverdale, and Langley than in West Point Grey.

How is this more important than the Surrey Langley line?
