Sorry, this is getting off topic, unless the carriages start using the Skytrain guideways...
Didn't I just say that both should be able to exist, and without creating a logjam? Take a metre or so away from both sides, make a third lane, problem solved.

But yeah, we're well off topic by now. Don't ever recall business owners bashing transit itself, just the effects of construction.

Was the "dual route" option an option where there was double tracks along both routes?

It would be interesting if there was an option for only a single track along both routes (equivalent to 2 one way roads). Westbound through Jericho, Eastbound through Sasamat. People going to downtown from Jericho can either walk a bit to the other station, or they can hop on the train where it will turn around at UBC anyways.
  • Jericho Gym to Sasamat Bus Stop = 1.1km, 15min walk
  • Jericho Gym to UBC via Train = 3.6km, 4.5min train
  • Jericho Gym to Sasamat Bus Stop via Train = 7.2km, 10min train

The million-dollar question: do TransLink and its buyers have to stick to the community plan?

Interesting, sure, but probably less useful.

one-way splits as symbolic transit

Now and then I see a professional study of a transit line — often light rail or streetcar — that suggests that the two directions of service should be a little bit apart from each other, say on different streets, so that they "cover more area."

This is the clearest and simplest example I've seen of the conflict between symbolic transit and actual transit. If you are creating transit for symbolic purposes — say, to give the appearance of permanent mobility so as to stimulate development, then it's certainly true that separating the two directions, so that rails and stops appear on two streets instead of one, will spread that appearance over a larger area.

However, if you care about people getting where they're going, the one-way split reduces the area served by a transit line. That's because for a two-way line to be useful, you have to be able to walk to both directions of a service. The further apart the two directions are, the smaller the area (light blue) that will have a reasonable walk to both of them.

I just wish there was a way for Translink to recoup some of the increase in value that this decision brings to the development of the Jericho lands.
The value of getting a site on the West Side to stage tunnel boring machines, and all that isn't exactly zero?

Aside from that, considering Jericho Lands is a MST development, one could argue that any value add to the project fits within the reconciliation process.

Let's be honest... this is a way for the CoV to get another station out of the line. A station at Sasamat would mean no station after Blanca. A Station at Jericho makes the distance from Blanca JUUUUSTTTT long enough to warrant a future station once the line inevitably is more successful than they imagine.

If it's West of Blanca and a future station, they may use this as justification for making the line above ground after Blanca. It's easy to plan a future station around a straight piece of elevated track. You just have to make sure your alignment is flat.

That's your opinion about station locations, but Translink doesn't share it. The update to the Mayor's Council shows Macdonald, Alma and Jericho stations, and then just one UBC station (located under the trolley bus loop). The track would be underground in Vancouver, come up west of Blanca, elevated to just east of Wesbrook Mall then underground to the station. An alternate route from Jericho would continue underground (probably cut-and-cover) diagonally underneath the golf course and then along University Boulevard. That would allow a possible station but not for the 61 years until the golf course can be redeveloped.

-Single station at UBC under the trolley bus loop.
-Tail track for train storage will allow for extension south or potentially directly to the 41st/49th line.
-UBC station is underground, line through UEL is either elevated along University Blvd or tunneled under the golf course.
-Line though CoV is as expected, tunneled with stations at Jericho, Alma, and Macdonald

I'm not surprised by this at all. Macdonald and Alma were both pretty obvious station locations, and with the redevelopment so is Jericho. Having a station at Sassamat as well would be overkill.

UBC may be big but it's not *that* big. Having a station at the bus loop and then another one about 1.5km to the south is asking for a lot. The "potential future infill station" however is pretty likely to happen as it's a long run between Jericho and the bus loop - I guess the only question there is where will it be and how long until it's built (which are kind of one question - if it's on the golf course then a long time, but if it's over by block F then it could be much sooner).

Looks like the potential future infill station on the golf course would only be if the line is underground there?
(I can't see an elevated station between the trees on the boulevard)

... Okay, I guess a lot of the trees are gone

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/ubc-skyt...0tNfECvCktJqHCiHHWEFNI9KGH_H-pQIo523f8ak

That's disappointing that there isn't a 2nd UBC station
- unless it's a negotiating tactic and that station will only happen if UBC coughs up all or some of the money
(ie like Lincoln Station or Olimpic Village Station)
With an underground station at UBC, it'll be tough to restart construction in the middle of campus for an extension.

The tunneling will all be cut and cover at UBC so restarting construction shouldn't have much more impact than building in one phase.

I suppose that would make it easier to restart compared to a TBM.

Wesbrook Station will probably come up again when the 41st SkyTrain becomes a thing. It's not like TransLink is painting us into a corner here like with Brighouse.

Yes, I'd agree that a second station is more "not now" than "no". I would expect that UBC will leave room for a potential station while continuing to develop the southern parts of the campus, and I'd also think that TransLink sees Wesbrook as a better fit for a potential future line along 41st.

For the record, it's less than 500m from Discovery/8th to Sasamat/10th. It's a similar distance from Burrard to the Christmas market, and that isn't considered too far. I don't know if the station will be located right on the southwest corner of the Jericho lands, but West Point Grey Village will still benefit from the Jericho station.

I do hope this is a tactic to get UBC to pay for the extra station/track. Haven't they hinted at partially funding it before?

I agree.

Normally I would be a little peeved about another "last mile" situation being drummed up by Translink but this one does make a little more sense to me. People are still getting to UBC with only 1 station being etched in, they now just have to transfer a little distance to the South Campus. Of course I would be happier if both stations were in the plan but I am cool with this.

Besides, like other users have mentioned, they can cut-and-cover in UBC since it would be disturb less people and businesses than C&Cing down Broadway (for example).

I think that the station design for UBC (and for its eventual second station) will have to be very well-thought out and much larger than standard stations since there would be such huge influxes and effluxes of large populations. I am honestly just as excited to see what the station design for UBC will be as I am for the route itself.
