The sheer number of highrise buildings in Ottawa-Gatineau is astonishing. It's second only to Toronto (edit: and Vancouver) in Canada in how many discreet clusters there are and many more are on the way. Currently we have clusters of highrises in Downtown/CBD, Hull/Zibi, Little Italy, Parkdale/Tunneys Pasture, Westboro, Ambleside, Riverside/Frobisher, St.Laurent/Brittany, The Byward Market/Lowertown, Vanier, Prince of Wales/Hogs Back, Lees Avenue, Billings Bridge, Hurdman and more. The problem is that so many of the buildings are boxy and of similar height, typically 20-28 stories for the tallest ones.
New clusters are rapidly developing at Lebreton/Bayview, Bayshore, Kanata Centrum, Trim Rd/Petrie, Gloucester, St.Laurent/Ogilvie, Westgate, Barrhaven, Centrepointe, Trainyards and more.
Almost every place I have mentioned has proposals/approvals/construction of new buildings over 30 stories tall up to 65 stories tall. Ottawa is about to lose it's boxy clump of a skyline and become more like A mini GTA with many separate clusters anchored by much taller buildings than currently exist. Give it five years and it will finally be impressive, give it ten and it will be one of Canada's most impressive skylines.
