If the Rossdale power plant and area looked somewhat like The Forks in Winnipeg, then yes it could be a draw

Not quite, but borrow elements from various inspirations.

Oh god, can you imagine the acrimony from the Westmount yuppies if they tried to add transit to that park corridor?
You don't want to know how they reacted when the City proposed reducing the size of their precious off-leash area.

10 minutes is reasonable.

This idea is going before council for the first time Dec 6:

8.2 102 Avenue LRT Pedestrian Crosswalk Recommendation (A. Stevenson)

Councillor A. Stevenson stated that at the next regular meeting of City Council, she would move the following:

That Administration explore the opportunity to pedestrianize 102 Avenue adjacent to Valley Line LRT and return to Urban Planning Committee with options for consideration.

A hearty heck no to that proposal. After seeing what a car-free stretch of Granville street has done to the urban fabric, you'd think people would have learned. Fewer eyes on the street and the lunatics take over.

Oh wait, did I just describe the current state of downtown Edmonton?

Who in their right mind thinks they can turn 102nd into some sort of Euro-pedestrian paradise, especially with what, 2-3?, continuous blocks of monolithic enclosed mall streetscape to gaze upon?

Open it as designed and see how it works.

Selective closures on summer weekends to test things out.

Go.

I agree. Try some closures and see what happens. But there's no need to rush to 'close' down the avenue completely to vehicles.

Closure of 102nd Ave may limit development at the BoM site - access to a parkade and main entrance may be problematic. Does anyone recall how many parking stalls are below grade now?

I think one summer of trial closures on the weekend would be nice. Route the bicycles on the street and have some pop up street vendors line the bike lane?

Um, there's nothing wrong with Granville transit mall.

I invite you to read up on its history since conception, and significant reworking over the years.

Depending which way the wind was blowing in this case.

It was first built in the 70s and was left untouched until it was renovated when they built the Canada Line. I've been on that street in all hours catching buses pre and post renovation. Are there people experiencing houselessness, mental health issues, addictions, etc., yes. But it's really no worse than any other populated centre in Canada, and it's busy at all hours.

Would something like that work in Edmonton on a 24/7 basis? Maybe not quite yet. But Granville Mall especially between Dunsmuir and Robson isn't exactly a pedestrian mecca either. It just attracts a lot of pedestrians being a major hub for local transit routes.

Sigh....

Those who refuse to read history are doomed to repeat it, and doubly so by those that think that apples are oranges.

Knock yourself out.

So Edmonton doesn't want to emulate hundreds of people walking around a major transit corridor?

Density, destination, diversity of use, direct access to storefronts.

We need to address these issues first.
