With the downtown densification policy fully endorsed there will likely be another 10,000 private motor vehicles originating in the downtown area within the next decade. The roadways as presently designed cannot bear that much excess traffic and especially while competing with the low-floor trams for space.

It's too late to fix these mistakes but at least we can scold those responsible at the polls provided they don't choose not to run again. Oh wait.
The LRT has its own ROW though.

so? that’s like complaining that the city leases pickup trucks from more than one manufacturer.

not only do i fail to see the disadvantage, if there is a recall on the cars from one of them, wouldn’t it be advantageous to still be able to keep the others in service?

Except these are not pick up trucks. They are multi million dollar cars. And if there is a recall on these that is serious.....this would be another fail with the lrt. But I guess I should not complain. I just had a meeting with the COE to do the Ultrasonic testing on the wheels, axles etc. This will encompasses all units new and used. I guess we find out in a month or so

It's more of a funny observation than a complaint. That is true though, Vancouver had to pull most of the Bombardier MK3 Skytrains out of service because of potential issues with the articulated sections.

Adding different fleet types similar to airlines makes things a bit more complicated from a maintenance and parts perspective. Wouldn't be as weird years down the road but the optics of two different models right from the start is a bit strange and just an unfortunate byproduct of the build/operate structure that's been set up.

I'm not sold on a permanent closure of that traffic lane. I like the idea of temporary closures on weekends but it serves a practical purpose outside of that and it simply would not have enough regular use at most times.

102 Ave has been closed for 4 years during the Valley Line SE LRT construction and drivers learned to deal with that. I don't really see any benefit to reopening 102 Ave to cars.

Once the LRT construction for the west line is completed, I want to see 102 Ave closed from 97 St to the Railtown district.

Don't mind the idea.
That road will be awful for cars.

The only problem is that the buildings along 102 Ave. are not pedestrian friendly, so what is the point of making that street pedestrian only? The only way this will work is if Edmonton City Centre mall opens up to the street.

Exactly. This is a corridor not a Main Street like Jasper or a more walkable area like RHW.

Perhaps a compromise would be to close the lane to vehicles, except service vehicles only.

At the very least there should be a trial run on the 102 Ave closure before you SSP guys pooh-pooh the whole thing beforehand.

A concern of the West valley line from Downtown to Lewis Farm Estates, is how are they going to lay the tracks down Stony Plain Road from 124 St to 139 St NW? I've driven through the area numerous times, and unless they are planning on buying tons of homes and razing them, I have no idea how they are going to make room for a rail line, unless they completely close off all vehicle traffic, and make it into a LRT/bike lane route only.

You can see the detailed map of that section here: https://www.edmonton.ca/public-files/assets/document?path=PDF/Roll_Plans_139St_to_119St.pdf

Looks like one lane of traffic in each direction is maintained with the Valley Line running up the centre.

And that's what they're proposing with their renovation of City Centre West:
https://globalnews.ca/news/8163766/edmonton-city-centre-shopping-mall-redesign/

However, not much can be done with Telus Toll, but the others could be reconfigured.

If the Manulife podium is ever renovated as per the proposed plans that would help the pedestrian realm immensely as well.

I don't have much faith in them opening up the mall to the street. They said they would open it up when the mall was renovated in the late '90s and failed to do it properly. The entire length of the mall needs to be opened for it to work, people need a reason to walk along the sidewalk.
