COMPLETELY different civilian ecosystem over there. Also the fact that's a country where weed (or really any any drugs for that manner) lands you lengthy jail sentences.
Metro-One can probably attest (or correct me) that if you were in a JR station selling, using or acting intoxicated by drugs you're going to be in for a REALLY bad week.
Its not just drugs. The culture is completely different, where people in general just respect things. It's also the ingrained culture to conform and be a "part" of the society and not the "individual". Not without its own set of issues, but it sure makes for a great functioning public infrastructure system. Don't think there's any country that has a better availability of public toilets.

That's China, not Japan.

China has a very different culture. It's my understanding that Chinese public bathrooms don't have any toilet paper because if they did it would all get stolen. But the surveillance state has a solution for that, too.

Yeah they have the trains run strictly on time and would even give passengers letters to give to their employers if the train delay is long enough to make them late for work.

I'm not talking about state surveillance. It's pretty prevalent in Korea as well which requires police to do sweeps of washrooms with camera detection equipment.

Agreed. Not sure where these will be deployed, but the lack of seats will surely be a disincentive to using Skytrain on the long hauls such as from Langley to Waterfront.

Having lived for about a year in Tokyo years back, I recall that on many lines, some trains were 'omnibus,' stopping at every station, and others were express, with limited stops.
I wonder if that could be done on the Langley extension, with every so many trains going more or less straight to Langley terminus. Too much engineering and too $$$$costly, I'm sure, just a thought.

Well nothing money can't fix. At a very minimum you need to double the tracks at the stations to 4-track (2 stopping, 2 bypass ) so you can have express trains bypass the middle stations and head straight to the terminus.

I'd give this happening about a 0.01% chance of happening

i wonder what the system would look like had we built the original Expo-Line with express tracks the whole way. would the Millennium-Line have been built with express tracks? would the Langley Extension be to keep the system the same? what would the stations look like? would they have even laid the tracks down on the express tracks, or just left it as guideway for the future?

would have been interesting to see what would have happened 35yrs later to the system had they built the system with express tracks.

Provided we have express platforms too, of course. Otherwise it defeats the entire purpose of having a SkyTrain: near-equal capacity to a subway by running smaller trains more often.

Bar the apocalypse, it'll happen - but not in my lifetime. And possibly not in the lifetime of anyone else who's currently a member of this site.

Wouldn't commuter rail that only stops in Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, and DT Van accomplish the same thing?

Yeah if they're gonna 4-track the section between Surrey and Langley, they might as well do the entire system.

If they are going to 4-track the entire system, might as well build a new line instead.

The advantage of a new line on a different route is that you get redundancy, better coverage and network connectivity. And construction of the new line doesn't impact service on the old.

The advantage of 4-tracking is that you get express service that you can't do with two independent lines on different routes, and you also makes it a lot easier to do maintenance without requiring shutdowns.

Timely discussion guys! I just posted my idea for a Expo redundancy line (with HSR and commuter rail implications) in this thread:

The advantage of 4-tracking is that you can run the system 24/7 while do maintenance on it, as well as expand your maintenance hours.

without the whole system having local + express (4 tracks) then none of it ever will. there really is no point. not unless they want to run express trains from langley - surrey, then turn them into local trains for the rest of the trip.

not sure if the timing could be made to work, but who knows.

personally, i think local + express tracks would have been a good idea in the original system. but they probably didn't need it since headway's on SkyTrain are a lot more than normal subways so that can compensate to a point.

i still think they should be building the whole system with 100m platforms though... shame they re only doing 82.5m for the Broadway Subway.
