We don't need washrooms in the stations. Besides the obvious operational costs to keep them clean, druggies will end up using them as a spot to shoot up, or vandals will "decorate" the place. Then it becomes a security issue.

That's the problem when the stations are unattended most of the time.

Link them with Compass? Like pay a nickel every time you use them and have them self cleaning?

What's the state of the Seabus washrooms? That might provide inside into washrooms at SkyTrain stations. Having the washrooms staffed might be a an idea (cleaner and watcher).

The Waterfront Seabus station is like a good five minute inside so it's probably not a good baseline.

You might not need washrooms, but plenty of other people might. Tourists would definitely use them, my wife when she was pregnant would have, little kids who don't go pee before they leave the house, etc.

I'm not saying washrooms are warranted - the cost and security would need to be ironed out first - but there is definitely demand.

the stations in Tokyo with washrooms were so nice, all the washrooms in Tokyo were nice though. Why can't Canadians treat things better.

So apparently the Metrotown station had washrooms installed but they can't be used? did they install when they did the major renovation?

The new trains look good.

it is illegal to charge for public bathrooms in BC. there was a case that went to the court about that and that was the ruling. i think it was the early/mid 2000s.

if you provide a public bathroom, its a human right people can use it for free. that's why we have so few of them because you cant charge people to use them, so you cant keep vagrants out, and you cant recover any possible operation costs. throw in the fact you know these will be used as places to shoot up drugs, overdose, and sleep in. you're just creating so many issues for no reason really. we really do not need them.

i don't know the details, it may not apply to restaurants. might only apply to public-owned ones. i cant find the details and don't have the time to look for. it.

i am sure someone here knows more.

Restaurants will often post No Public Washroom. But the restaurants I have worked at have always said We Cannot deny people the use of the washrooms, even if they are not going to come into eat.

this one reminds me of one of the washrooms at a recently renovated station I saw. The toilets were behind fully closeable doors so loads of privacy. It was very clean.

I think you are confusing people who think it's a human right to have access to a washroom vs. actual case law.

Ontario set a law for delivery workers to have washroom access. That seems unneeded if there was blanket access for anyone to use a washroom.

https://torontosun.com/news/provincial/o...om-access-mandatory-for-delivery-drivers

BC seems to have or had a public toilet act:

https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/96389_pit

There might be municipal rules as well.

Just thought about this... if they rename the Mark III to Mark IV, then...

Mark I will be single car trainset (with no articulated joint)
Mark II will be 2-car trainset
Mark III no longer exist because we don't have 3-car trains
Mark IV will be 4-car trains
Mark V will be 5-car trains

It all works out well, isn't it?

Some of the Asian washroom I see are free to use, but you'll have to pay for paper towel or tissues... (so you have to pay for it in some way, unless you bring your own).

But... I don't see how that would work here....

i would be careful with using what other provinces do. this would probably fall under provincial jurisdiction and therefore wont necessary apply.

though i am 95% sure there was a case that went to the courts about that here in BC when Vancouver was first trying out those public toilets on the streets and that is why that roll out ended up stopping since they couldn't charge people to use them.

it is possible i am misremembering, though i could have sworn that was a thing.

British Columbia Public Toilet Act, as amended 2009.

"No payment for use of toilets
2 An owner, occupier or other person having control over a public place or building must not install, or authorize or permit the installation or maintain, in the public institution or building, a toilet that is contained in

(a) a closet, receptacle or compartment, or

(b) a washroom or restroom

that is locked and requires the deposit of a coin or the payment of money for the use of the toilet."

Would requiring a $0.00 from a Compass card for access work?

Presumably, but what about cash fare transit users?

Seems like it was repealed in 2009 and replaced by the Public Health Act

Quote:
Regulations respecting public toilets
124 The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations respecting public toilets as follows:

(a)defining "public toilet" for the purposes of a regulation made under this section;

(b)prohibiting persons from demanding or requiring payment for the use of or access to a public toilet;

(c)prohibiting persons from installing or having control of a public toilet that operates only on payment.

Be like me and roll an old office chair into the station, up the elevator and onto the train without getting out of it. Whee!

COMPLETELY different civilian ecosystem over there. Also the fact that's a country where weed (or really any any drugs for that manner) lands you lengthy jail sentences.
Metro-One can probably attest (or correct me) that if you were in a JR station selling, using or acting intoxicated by drugs you're going to be in for a REALLY bad week.
