Maybe they plan on removing 1 of those US routes every week and hope no one notices? 🤣

I wonder if the lack of CBP facilities at BUR were the reason. I suspect they may quietly back off YYC-AZA/LAS as well.

Whether that's the case or not, it shows lack of preparation. Their "route planning" - if we can even call it that - is the equivalent of throwing darts at a dart board.

I meant it as a joke, but honestly, what I wrote above your post is probably the most financially prudent strategy they can take right now.

USCBP should really look at permitting pre-cleared flights into airports without customs facilities.

If the flight is pre-cleared in Canada who cares whether the destination airport has customs facilities. In the event of an issue they can always divert to LAX or SNA. Swoop was running YEG-AZA, guess that means they have customs staff? Weird that BUR doesn't given how much more traffic goes through BUR vs AZA.

I didn't think Mesa Gateway had border staff, but could be wrong.

I believe OGG, PSP, LGA are other examples of US airports that don't have a CBP presence but currently accept pre-cleared flights from Canada.

I'm assuming the airlines work something out with the US authorities in case they want to re-examine the flights, perhaps providing a reasonable diversion plan?

Probably something Flair may want to look into before announcing new routes.

It seems extremely ridiculous and unprofessional for an airline to remove routes literally one or two days after announcing them...are they that unorganized??

I seem to recall a similar thread, for a different airport, a looooong time ago.

Mesa Gateway has a CBP office on site, but there are no standard CBP facilities (i.e. agents at kiosks, pre-build screening rooms) like at the larger airports. The office would primarily service private/charter flights on demand.

https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ports/phoenix-mesa-gateway-airport-arizona-2682

I believe the conclusion on the old thread is that as long as there is an CBP office and a person "on call", it is OK for Canadian pre-cleared flights to land. In the unlikely event something happens en-route that would require CBP at the destination, there is someone there who can deal with it.

BUR is an airport short on checkin desks and gates. Plus no CUTE system to share common gate information.

MY guess having been through BUR is that an arrangement fell through for checkin and gate use. American carriers are ramping up very fast right now.

Speaking of ridiculous and unprofessional.....

https://canadianaviationnews.wordpress.c...irlines-phone-lines-closed-until-monday/

It seems that Flair Airlines is struggling to respond to customer enquiries in a timely manner, so the company is taking an unconventional approach. Through Monday, July 19, 2021, Flair Airlines won’t answer phones, as the company instead focuses on the backlog of customer enquiries, and on tripling the size of its customer service staff.
At least they realise it's totally unacceptable and are trying to correct the issue. Still, very unprofessional. You're not running a bakery here.....

if BUR wants to attract new carriers (barring any issues with NIMBYs) they need to build a new terminal. The current one is too small, too close to the runways, and is tucked away in the smallest of all corners at the airport, preventing expansion. There is ample room to build a new terminal northeast of both runways, close to the control tower. Empty land, ripe for development.

Edit: Did some research. Seems like something is in the works.

The US likes to complicate things for no reason. As far as I can tell, there are 3 kinds of port of entry airports that can host foreign passengers.

1. International airport
2. Landing rights airport
3. User fee airport. (PSP, SNA are user fee airports.)

Read about the differences here:
https://www.customsmobile.com/regulation..._chapterI_part122_subpartB_section122.13

Oddly enough, JFK or LAX aren't in the list of international airports. Go figure ! They must be landing rights airports (the only one that doesn't have a list online, for some reason). Anyways, suffice it to say, OGG and PSP are port of entries. BUR isn't.

https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ports/ca

https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ports/hi

Now, as far as LGA is concerned, it isn't a port of entry (see: https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ports/ny), but for some reason is still allowed to host flights from pre-clearance airports in Canada, Aruba, Bahamas and Bermuda. Go figure as to why. There must be a special arrangement between CBP and the airport.

It hasn't been announced but flights between Calgary and Castlegar look to be back in November.
Can anyone in Calgary confirm?
Thank you!

^Air Canada's schedule hasn't been fully modified for the Winter yet, so anything beyond October 31 is still pre-COVID.

A French Bee 350 landed yesterday from ORY. Looks like the fuel stop they were doing at YVR has temporary moved over to us due to some issues at YVR?

The Lufthansa S22 service is possibly being switched back to Eurowings, I believe now planned from June rather than March.

Was sitting on the back deck at my parents when that flew over. So Calgary was just a pit stop? What was the final destination?

Flies ORY-PPT, and yes YYC is just a fuel stop. They cannot pick up or drop off any pax.

Saw this Qatar Airways video on youtube, and noticed quite a few shots of the Calgary skyline and of Banff/Alberta! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IQqVIEoADY

Any chances that Qatar Airways is trying to come to YYC? I feel like this is something the airport authority should pursue as well, for post-pandemic recovery.

To be fair, they added quite a bit of shots Canada-wide, such as the Halifax harbor. It would be cool but I'd prefer to keep our European service and not have those flights lose passengers to Qatar.
