New Mosiac is basically a shinier Taylor Field with 10% more seats.
Mosaic is a massive upgrade from Taylor Field. I was trying to make the point that to massively upgrade Brandt to big city standards would cost much more than they are estimating. If they only spend $100 million, it won't be a big improvement, and probably won't even have 10,000 seats.

Using MTS in Winnipeg as a guide (probably the best example given proximity/weather/ground conditions)... It is a fairly standard facility with $15k seats, though they did do some upgrades in preparation for the return of the Jets. Its inflation adjusted cost is right around $200 mill.

I'd be surprised if we'd be able to build something that is a significant upgrade to the Brandt Centre for anything less than $150 mill.

There are a whole bunch of proposals going around right now with the city and province looking to hand out corporate welfare in the name of "economic development". There's the biofuel plant, ag production, and a couple of ag bi-product proposals also out there as well.

I have some concerns with all the spending demands on luxuries. The city is pressed to pay its bill as it for road maintenance, sidewalk repair, etc etc etc.
I agree with you 100%. It's time to get realistic.

Exactly not only that half of the downtown core is vacant land so this is a win-win situation can’t wait for it to get built Way to go Regina you were on your way to prosperity

I would say the arena has a better chance of happening than the ball park, considering the arena already has the blessing of city council to move forward in planning/proposals.

I'm conflicted by all this. I get that Currie Field is a dump but I don't think a new ballpark in the downtown is the answer.

The Brandt Centre has outlived it's best-before date but I think for it to be worthwhile, we'd have to build an arena with 12,000 seats to attract the kind of events that we want.

That's a lot of money.

I agree the arena has a a substantially better chance of proceeding.

1) big business support (Evraz and Brandt)
2) political will (Masters was on the REAL board until last summer and clearly maintains a close relationship)
3) The Pats average over 10x the fans per season than the Red Sox
4) Concerts are a real tourism driver in a way the Pats and Red Sox are not
5) year round year vs 4 months of potential use

And perhaps most importantly, the Agridome 2.0 should attract a lot more private dollars vs the $0 of Currie Field 2.0

I am not even following the ball park discussion as I view it as completely far fetched for a number of reasons.

I would point out that there is zero chance Evraz will continue to sponsor REAL. This was done in the IPSCO days. Evraz has no interest and no budget for this sort of thing.

I noticed this morning, an article on cbc.ca/news/saskatchewan (link below) regarding the 'potential' sale of 633 acres of land just north of the refinery, as mentioned in this thread previously.

It sounds great, but having lived in Regina my entire life, I know how many proposed developments have never came to fruition, for one reason or another.

A ton of secrecy and selling below market value makes me nervous after the fiasco that was the GTH and the penchant of letting certain wealthy people to build/develop/etc near whatever they want in this city.

Co-op just bought the biofuels company that the city agreed to give a million dollars to last month so presumably that's what the land is for.

That said, it's disgraceful that we'd sell the land for that low a price. It's barely over ag prices around Regina.

Regina was founded on land scandals, it's only appropriate that we keep the tradition going.

Sounds like we'd be "subsidizing" this land purchase because of a promise of jobs and economic development. Not really surprising. It happens everywhere.

City council voted to give the biofuel company $1M a little while back. I believe that was the amount. With the promise of jobs etc. Would I be right in thinking this money may have been given out through a cheaper than market land sale?

Edit: And I see all kinds of craziness just happened at city council. I have no idea what is happening here.
