This is quite literally backwards. The arena idea was always the Semple's idea, hence why they've been consolidating holdings, including buying more property in the last month or so.

Now personally I don't see them doing anything without massive public investment.

I often drive by the Maple Leaf pool and construction is still moving along. Whether they're on schedule or not remains to be seen but it's still an active construction site.

South of Armour Road, some interesting elements.

North of Armour...less so. That's a lot of proposed development, where even over 20 years I'm not sure the demand will be there given how much competition there is for this type of development. Not to mention, a lot of space dedicated to parking/loading/storage. This part of the plan does not look to be oriented towards future demands.

If it was up to me, no new suburban neighbourhoods in the next 15 years.

For what it's worth....

In 2020, the Calgary Flames franchise had an estimated value of 480 million U.S. dollars.

By comparison, in 2016, the Regina Pats franchise was worth an estimated $12.14 million (Cdn).

I think a bigger reason why it wouldn't work is that most people wouldn't care. I mean, how many hard core Pats fans are there? A couple thousand? There is just not a big enough fan base for threatening to move a WHL team to another city. I know hockey is king in this country, but it is junior hockey.

If anything the Semples would pressure the government behind the scenes. From what I've heard they are supporters of the Sask party and likely contribute decent amounts of money as political donations. Getting the provincial government to spin it as a spending relief package to get the economy going post covid as part of an infrastructure type or big project type message to fire up the economy.

Not sure that would work either but is more likely than pressuring the government by threatening to move the team.

Forgot to mention that a new kitchen called Kith and Kin is opening in Malinche's place in Pile o Bones. Sounds like a more traditional beer hall type of food but that is yet to be announce.

The City Centre Core Partnership Framework and Action Plan was presented yesterday at Exec committee. It's looking at how the City, Regina Downtown BID, RWBID, and REAL might collaborate in a way that better supports growth and change in the core.

Interestingly enough it does highlight a number of public projects in the SWOT analysis. Specifically identifying strengths as:

"Catalyst civic level investment - Sask Drive, Dewdney Ave, Aquatic Facility, Library modernization, new mid-sized arena and others should be strategically located."

The fact that the two projects that are in the planning stages (Sask Drive and Dewdney Avenue upgrades) are listed next to the others, suggests to me that these others may be on the horizon too. Based on other sections of the report, the arena may be around 7000+ seats.

It is a framework. It is indeed exciting, as I asked for a City Centre plan about 5 years ago, but also don't read too much into what it is saying in terms of specifics. The specifics, the priorities, and the funding are to be determined.

I can tell you a lot of things are being discussed, and will continue being discussed.

Maybe government support for the Arena to replace approval of the "CNIB" building in the park....
