In the past I've driven to Ottawa from Montreal on the 50, even though it's a bit longer than taking the 417 through Ontario – just so I could enjoy the more impressive approach to town. You basically have the ground-level equivalent of that shot, with Parliament Hill rising behind the river and the bridges.

So is Montreal going to be the first Canadian City to have a true layered “underground” and “above ground” rail system?

Sure Vancouver Skytrain has above ground and underground sections, but they are the same system.

Montreal will have the first real feel of different layered systems, such as in Japan where, for example in Osaka, you have JR Rail Lines, Hanku Rail Lines, and then the subway system (along with others).

Vancouver's Expo/Millenium vs Canada Line are no more the same system than Montreal's REM and Metro.

Although they have different technology/rolling stock, they are both part of the Skytrain system, within the same fare structure and owned by TransLink (though Canada is operated through a ppp).

It's like saying the Trillium Line is not the same system as the Confederation Line (different technology and ppp maintenance contracts, but within OC Transpo's O-Train system). Or Line 3 and 5 of the TTC are not part of Toronto's rapid transit system.

The Oldman River valley is gorgeous. It's easily one of the nicest parcels of land in the country. I especially liked Fort Whoop Up in Indian Battle Park. It's an interesting place.

The REM, Métro and exo suburban trains have different operators, but will soon have the same integrated fare structure.

Is Edmonton not as flat as Winnipeg? Seems like there are hills, or at least the river is in a valley.
