What? Isn't the main entrance to the station from the corner of Beatty and Dunsmuir?

BC Transit.
There was a news article around 1995 where the city was asking for the path to be reopened and BC Transit wasn't interested due to crime concerns.

Could all their arcades be to provide relief from the summer heat and rain? Vancouver has winter and autumn rain and chill to deal with instead.

Any idea when Gateway's 2nd entrance was demolished due to crime concerns?

I don't remember Gateway ever having a 2nd entrance. I was freaked the f*** out once by some guy in the current only entrance that I went the long way around to the elevator on street level instead and took the elevator up. Didn't need that 2nd entrance for crime concerns.

I do see evidence that something existed before.

That one I got an answer for here on the forum.
Gateway closed the second entrance in part because a surrounding development never happened and the station at the time was not seeing enough traffic to justify it. If memory serves it was in the late 90's so it wasn't open long.

Why they demolished it instead of just keeping the shutters closed....no idea.

In that picture, the floor tiles are different where the staircase was, and that wayfinding panel hung in the center of the platform was to indicate the exit.

I'm also thinking that the lost and found office is placed where the tunnel entrance under Beatty would have connected.

Pretty much. I can't get good photos in that corner because station security is oddly fast whenever someone wanders over there.

Anyways, we're wandering off-topic unless we want to continue discussing additional entrances for the Broadway Extension.

The nail in the coffin for the Beatty St. west exit was when the 111 Dunsmuir office tower did not connect to it underground - likely due to the design (open plaza out front with little retail and the smaller size of the building.

Even Park Place did not connect to the "future connection" from Burrard Station and it's as big of an office tower as you get in Vnacouver. Park Place has a minicule amount of retail in its basement.

As aluded to above, crime is probably the major deterrant for additional extrances. That probably isn't an issue in Japan.

If the City finally manages to remove the Viaducts (if ever), Beatty Street would most likely become very busy. At the time, Transit users would definitely appreciate having a secondary access/egress to the station as I would anticipate longer waits waiting to cross that intersection.

Let's keep on topic please. The conversation about that one time entrance has been exhausted.

Its not about the budget being low, its about costs being high. In Korea especially subways are constructed *super* cheap. As in, the new RER style regional express system that is mostly underground has 50km of tunnels being build for like 3 billion.

Europe builds stuff way cheaper too!

Under the platform, you can see where there's concrete panels under the same spot the different-coloured bricks are. Shame it isn't there anymore, but it's a weird station already.

For those interested, the Urban Design Panel will be reviewing the Broadway Subway stations today at 4pm.

Quote:
Broadway Subway Project (BSP)
Description: To develop six new underground skytrain stations and transit plazas as part of the Broadway Subway Project. Stations locations are as follows: GNW- Emily Carr, Mount Pleasant,Broadway City Hall (interchange station integrated with the existing Canada Line), OakVGH, South Granville and Arbutus. Note: This session will be non-voting meeting of the panel. The project is being delivered by the Province, therefore does not require a development permit and instead follows the Design Advisory Process (DAP).
https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/udp-agenda-01132021.pdf

Unfortunately, neither I nor my spouse will be able to attend today, so we might have to wait for the minutes to find out how this one went.

You can join the meeting from this page
