Kruger spent $4.8 million in 2010 to modernize the plant, cut CO2 emissions and install a heat recovery system (which I believe is the basis of Zibi's district heating). Last year Kruger renewed its lease with the NCC, allowing the plant to operate until 2053. As part of the agreement Kruger will spend $6 million to turn one of its private parking lots into a new public park. Sounds like they are planning to stay put.

I had no idea they extended the lease until 2053. Last I heard was the 20 year extension around 2010.

Would've been neat if they looked at Domino park at Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn building around industrial history of the place.
But who am I kidding it will be just grass, MUPs and a couple of benches...

That's such disappointing news. I didn't realize we're going to be stuck with that wasteful eyesore for another 30+ years. Ugh.

It may not be 100% accurate, but the fact that it shows a jog between blocks 208 and 213 suggests to me that it's pretty close. That work was completed this summer.
Note that the pipes to and from Kruger enter block 10 from the north side of the building. I think it's a safe bet that the loop will be buried under Jos. Montferrand, as it already is under Booth Street on Chaudiere Island.

La Ville de Gatineau propose de renommer deux rues et une place publique dans le projet Zibi en hommage à des allumettières qui ont vécu et travaillé en Outaouais.

Ainsi, la rue Ruggles-Wright deviendra la rue Georgina-Cabana, la rue Jennie-Shirreff sera rebaptisée la rue Alzire-Deschenes et la place de l’Île-Philemon portera plutôt le nom de la place des Contremaîtresses.

Mme Cabana fut allumettière à l’usine E.B. Eddy, et s’est démarquée par son implication syndicale. Mme Deschenes fut allumettière pendant 17 ans, et fut victime de la plus grave maladie associée à la fabrication d’allumettes, la nécrose maxillaire. Les contremaîtresses travaillaient et occupaient un poste de supervision.

Ces nouvelles appellations au sein de la communauté riveraine située aux alentours du pont Chaudière répondent aux critères de désignations du Comité de toponymie. Celui-ci souhaite rendre le nom des lieux et des artères plus représentatifs de la contribution de tous, et cherche à prioriser une toponymie féminine, autochtone et qui représente la diversité culturelle, a indiqué la Ville de Gatineau dans un communiqué.

Les nouvelles dénominations devront recevoir l’aval de la Commission de la toponymie du Québec.

Place des Contremaîtresses (formerly Place de l’Île-Philemon), is the square between blocks 2+3 and what is now Zibi House.

Not that I mind, but the City of Gatineau clearly wants to replace the names of anglo settlers and the lumber barons (Jennie Shirreff was E.B. Eddy's wife) with those of the French Canadians who worked for them. At this rate, rue Ezra doesn't stand a chance :-)

Thanks for the response. I'm also fine with these changes. Governments over the years have had a bad habit of honouring the same people over and over again (the Wrights and Eddys in Gatineau, John A. and Cartier in Ottawa, for example).

The Wrights were known for their ridiculously high rents, which stymied the growth of Hull, thus giving Bytown the advantage, and Eddy was a miser who underpaid his employees and put their lives in danger. Yes, they did make major contributions to the region in many ways and we should continue to preserve their memory, but I'm glad we're toning it down by recognizing the labourers who did most of the work.

Hopefully it doesn't stick out much ruining the falls view and the bridge look. Otherwise it will be a huge letdown...

Given how high the water got 2 years ago, that's a real possibility.

Do we know if they started building the landing spot on the Gatineau side? I would go check but I'm not sure where it's suppose to go, I imagine around where the rental tower/power plant is?

The Gatineau landing spot will be closer to the Portage Bridge.
