Amur Maples also have beautiful trunks/bark. The other two have spectacular blossoms.

I walked across the median last night. I do not see any evidence of lights or irrigation. There are what appear to be many drains, which seems odd to me. Every median has a power box with 4 outlets. I assume these are to allow the addition of Xmas lights and twinkle lights in the branches.

It did seem like tubing was being buried under the trees, so the irrigation part might be out of sight.

One of the issues with some of these projects though is that the wood chips/mulch used don't hold up at all in our windy conditions.

The medians on Prince of Wales have had no issues.

I mentioned it because walking to and from work, I've seen the chips/mulch piling up in the new gutter design. There's that bump out from the normal corner with a drain grate that almost marks how the corner used to be.

Also... Basically all the wood chips are gone from from the block of Victoria just West of Albert that they did a year or two ago. Maybe they don't need them anymore there though?

The city responded that there is irrigation specific from Albert Street to Broad Street. The electrical boxes are for decorative lighting future use with possible below lighting in the future summer months when the trees become bigger.

Glad to hear there is in fact irrigation installed. It would seem a huge waste to not do that when they had the chance.

We talked about this in 2014... is it legal? Yes - if there are 2 dashed lines on Albert, then there are 3 driving lanes.

Is it likely that Reginans will begin driving in the curb lane? nope. Custom is that Reginans don't drive in this lane, and the fact is that - unless signed to the contrary - it's legal to park in the curb lane of any Regina street with a speed limit of 50km/h or lower. So, driving in this lane would be annoying - because there would invariably be people parked in it.

(we did note at the time that there are virtually no 'No Parking' signs on the east side of Albert between 25th & College... making it technically legal to park in the curb lane. No one does, and I'm willing to bet you'd get a ticket & a tow pretty darn quickly - doubt the ticket would stand-up in court, though [unless they've dramatically increased the number of No Parking signs])

I agree. Sadly, he's par for the course in terms of being out-of-touch on Council... with rare exceptions, a room full of clowns who couldn't find their way out of a wet paper bag. Never saw a status quo they didn't want upheld; never met a NIMBY they didn't agree with; never considered blinking without ordering an independent consultant's report on the unique-to-Regina impacts of blinking (and a subsequent report on the unique-to-Regina approaches to blinking).

Thanks for posting those photos, UrbanClimate.

I live less than a block away from the site of the new Conexus building (and have for 35 years). I pass by it often, but never think to take any photos (no smart phone). I am quite pleased with how this has turned out. I was not happy at the beginning, but it is what it is. Hopefully this sort of thing doesn't happen again (hello PCC/Brandt/CNIB?) but what Conexus gave us is actually pretty good, and it fits in surprisingly well with the Old College Avenue Campus as well as the neighbourhood.

I have to agree. I don't think we should be giving any more sweetheart deals to big companies, and I would have preferred Conexus to build on a vacant downtown lot, but I'm happy with what they built and what it brings to the park and the old campus. I'm excited to see Darke Hall when it's all done. I certainly prefer this over Conexus building a suburban head office.

Moot point, as the City has no say. Province holds all the cards.

City/Mayor only hold a degree of informal sway... but (unfortunately) can’t do anything to stop the project, if the Prov wants it to go ahead.

You are right, they can't do anything formal. But a Mayor could make a stink about it, make it more public, make it more difficult for them to try to sneak it through.

The render in the article looks nice...for Rose Street & 12th Avenue.

Might be a while. Costco doesn't work that way. Based on population/memberships so Sk might be over-serviced already. There's been talk about a 4th Costco in Winnipeg for 10 plus years. They make their money off memberships, not bodies in the building buying stuff. Winnipeg (800k) for example has 3 and I've been told from who works on all the Cdn Costcos, they feel it's over-serviced. They don't make enough money despite being full all the time. If a 4th is ever built in Wpg, they've talked about closing the first one built in Wpg (doesn't have the same amenities as others).

Yep, I don't think they would've expanded the east one so much when they went to the new location if there was any consideration of a second one. A second Costco in Regina is like an IKEA here: it's a pipe dream and talking about it isn't going to make it happen.
