Unfortunately due to the pandemic and coming economic contraction/depression, I think we're going to see massive cuts to city and provincial budgets.

There is plans for stuff like this in Eastbrook on the Greens with a town square concept but I'm guessing it will be 10 years before it's ever built.
Well I sure hope it turns out better than the 'town square' in Grasslands, which is a huge disappointment so far.

As for the green paint for the bike lanes, yeah, that is all fine and dandy. But with our harsh climate and the City's utter lack of maintenance of markings for existing bike lanes (see Lorne Street and Smith Street). Cars and trucks drive down the bike lane all the time. And the few bike lane signs have been put in terrible spots that no one can see them. Things always look grand on paper but perhaps the planners should get off their asses and actually do a
'pre-planning site tour'. There is a bike lane sign on Lorne Street just north of the intersection with 15th Avenue across from my hi-rise. It can't be seen because of the trees. WTF?!

Sorry, I am on a bit of a rant today.

Is the City finally going to replace the sidewalks along 11th Avenue in the heart of downtown? Or are they just going to do the curbs? The current condition is an effing embarrassment. Nothing says 'provincial capital' more than asphalt patches on our sidewalks. I am in my early 60's but I have to walk looking at the sidewalk ahead of me so I don't trip and fall, or twist my ankle.

Also in the news today is mention that they are going to begin work on restoring the glockenspiel in Victoria Park. I know this has been discussed many times previously but that should have been done when the god-awful city square was built. Before that ruined our downtown (sorry, it does very little for the city) they should have replaced all of the sidewalks, and re-do the Scarth Street Mall. (I refuse to call it the Frederick W. Hill Mall).

Okay, that's enough for now as I might explode

The city is going to have no money for fixing anything in the city post-pandemic. It's going to leave us in a huge mess. IF they would smarten up and cancel the Wascana vanity project, I mean Wascana water park, that money could be better used for necessities like fixing unsafe sidewalks after this.

You're absolutely correct about the bike lanes. The paint is either covered in the winter or faded in the summer. Or you just have clueless drivers who don't seem to notice. I would really prefer we had bike lines separated by a curb or something comparable. Similar to the Exchange District in Winnipeg. Obviously more cost prohibitive, but much more effective and clear

St Chad's Revival Project

Looks like this project is well underway. Anyone know what's going in the building?

Love what they have been doing with St. Chad’s. You can tell the developers have a true love for the architecture and restoring it the best way. I wish brick was used more in Regina new-builds.

Will be nice to have some construction going on there. I know it’s a crown corporation, but some more buildings will make it look slightly less of a disappointment.

Any idea what kind of trees they are? I hope these have a sufficient soil pod to survive and establish.

trees are a mixture of ornamentals. A soil trench was installed under them to proved growing area. Irrigation is also provided.

Out of pure curiosity, does anyone know what that red barn on Arcola by Winnipeg Street (behind the dental office) used to be? It just seems so random and out of place, I assume it was built a long time ago.

IIRC, from what my mother told me, someone had some animals there. I am not sure if they were horses, but we are talking 100 years ago. Back then there were a still a lot of horse drawn wagons. Plus, this was almost the northern edge of town. A couple blocks north on Winnipeg Street was Burns Foods slaughterhouse (this site was most recently a SaskEnergy service facility, but the Burns buildings are long gone). Burns was one of two meat packing plants in Regina. They were still there when I grew up in the 60's although I never lived in the area, but there were some horrible smells coming from Burns, and depending on the wind direction (namely from the north-east) you could get a whiff of it downtown. Speaking of odours, maybe a lot of you didn't know that Regina once had two oil refineries. Imperial Oil had a big refinery on Winnipeg Street North near where the Regina Transit operations centre and food bank is.

From Historical Regina Facebook page:

it was part of the Broder dairy farm operations; Broder was an early settler, his house was at SE Winnipeg & Victoria, he gave the land for St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Broder's Annex is named after him. he also built the Broder Bldg aka Medical & Dental Bldg.

Also there is mention that it was a livery stable for a time and in the 1930's a Mr. Zaharick did sleigh rides from there.
