The City did ask how much it would be to grade separate at Kingsway/111 and PEA in separate council reports, although that was in the context of finalising the permanent NAIT station.

Metro NW update: construction starts this summer

The Metro Line NW has reached a significant milestone as we have selected a Construction Manager to deliver the first phase of the project.

In March, the City selected PCL Construction to deliver the 1.6-km expansion from NAIT to Blatchford. With the agreement finalized, PCL has started providing pre-construction services and the project is on track to start construction this summer.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) to provide construction management services for the Metro Line was issued on September 26, 2019 and closed on October 30, 2019. Three shortlisted teams submitted proposals during this phase. The City selected PCL Construction after carefully reviewing and evaluating the submissions based on rigorous criteria.

The Metro Line NW Phase 1 extension includes two LRT stations:
-NAIT/Blatchford Market Station situated at the heart of Blatchford Town Centre and the NAIT campus redevelopment
-Blatchford Gate Station in northeast Blatchford

Construction preparations will start this spring, including:
Detailed design
Relocating utilities
Reconfiguring 109 St between Princess Elizabeth Ave and 118 Ave

The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve and many businesses and industries are feeling its effect. We also recognize the current market conditions and labour force availability are challenging and some projects may experience schedule impacts. We are continuing to work with all of our industry partners to understand those impacts and address them accordingly. We continue to monitor this situation and take our direction from Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. These are challenging times; we are committed to working with our industry partners to address this challenge together.

In the short term our projects are challenged by COVID-19, but we are currently working to keep the Metro NW LRT Expansion project moving forward as robust and healthy infrastructure is critical to a safe, stable and healthy Edmonton.

The City continues to take immediate action in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. To learn more about the City’s response to COVID-19, visit our webpage.

Good news! Hopefully PCL - or whoever is being contracted - won't — up the signalling in this part of the line.
Speaking of, how's the signalling replacement on the current NAIT LRT line? I haven't heard a peep on it.

I wonder where that discussion ended up. Obviously the cost to grade separate now would be considerably more than when construction began in 2010. I doubt they'd want to fit the bill now when there are seemingly-higher LRT funding priorities now like the Metro Line NW extension, Capital Line South Extension and Valley Line W.

Work is going on with the signaling. I don't know what stage it's at but it's happening.

Metro Line Update: new signalling system taking shape
by City of Edmonton | Posted on November 7, 2019

The City of Edmonton is digging in on the signalling system for the Metro Line LRT.

Construction and installation of the new system will begin soon and take about a year. Edmontonians will start to see crews cutting concrete and installing wheel detectors, axle counters and other equipment on the tracks between MacEwan and NAIT stations.

Nowhere, since any improvements would have been rolled into the Blatchford extension works.

You piqued my curiosity so I did some internet trawling and found the relevant committee meetings (can't link to the documents directly for some reason):

I wonder what the status of the Terwillegar Drive BRT is though.

TLC for LRT: Major maintenance & revitalization projects set to begin
April 28, 2020

Starting Sunday, May 3, major LRT maintenance and revitalization projects will get underway as we resume our TLC for LRT initiative that began last year. Edmonton’s 40-plus year-old LRT network needs maintenance and upgrades to ensure it continues serving Edmontonians reliably and efficiently for the long-term.

McKernan/Belgravia LRT Station Closure
From May 3 until July, McKernan/Belgravia LRT Station will be closed to passengers to conduct platform repairs and tile replacement. Trains will continue to pass through the station, but will not stop to pick up or drop off passengers. Customers can use South Campus or Health Sciences to board or exit the LRT. Alternatively, bus routes 4 and 106 travel to/from South Campus and Health Sciences. We recommend customers check takeETS.com for their up-to-date trip planning information.

“We continually do our best to minimize disruptions for our passengers. A full station closure condenses the construction schedule while allowing us to continue operating longer trains to promote physical distancing between passengers. McKernan/Belgravia also sees the lowest passenger boardings of all 18 LRT stations,” said Craig McKeown, Director of LRT Operations and Maintenance.

Starting May 4, after 9 a.m. daily, Capital/Metro Line trains will run every 15 minutes, with Metro Line trains only running between Health Sciences and NAIT until McKernan/Belgravia re-opens.

Stadium LRT Station Redevelopment
The Stadium LRT Station Redevelopment project is scheduled to begin in mid-May. This project will address aging infrastructure that has been serving Edmonton for over 40 years. Improvements include an additional platform, new heated shelters, public washrooms and security office. This work will also involve renovating the entire station building, including the roof canopy, and removing the underground concourse. With these changes, passengers will enjoy an improved customer experience, including upgraded lighting and a more comfortable waiting area. We anticipate construction will be completed in January 2022.

May 16-18: Partial LRT closure between Clareview and Churchill
As part of the work at Stadium Station, on the May long weekend (May 16-18), LRT service will be suspended between Clareview and Churchill. Buses will replace LRT between these stations. LRT will continue to run between Century Park and NAIT every 15 minutes. Platform tile replacement will also begin at Coliseum during the May long weekend.

Health Sciences Station pedestrian crossing upgrades
During three weekends in May (9-10, 16-17 and 23-24), Capital Line trains will only run every 15 minutes, as crews will be working on upgrades to the pedestrian crossing at the north entrance of Health Sciences station. On May 9-10 and 23-24, Metro Line trains will only run between NAIT and Grandin stations. This crossing, as well as the north entrance to Health Sciences station, will also be closed from June 19-29.

As more projects and schedules are finalized, they will be added to edmonton.ca/tlcforlrt, announced on ETS social media and via onsite signage at stations undergoing improvements.

During COVID-19, we are continuing to maintain and improve our city through infrastructure renewal. We are closely following the most recent guidelines and recommendations set by the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health, and are taking extra steps to ensure the places where we work are safe, sanitary, and provide proper physical distancing.

Not until the bunkers that are City Centre Mall and the Telus Toll buildings open up to the street. Manulife's plans will help, but all frontages need to be activated more than they currently are.

Regency needs to move on the BMO site as well so the LRT isn't moving past a vacant lot for years to come...

I fantasize that the former Tegler Building site could become a new underground high speed train and regional rail station due to its central location.

All along 102 ave on the south side is going to be dream to talk up and down. I anticipate a lot of people who frequent the area will feel the same. That whole section is going from really narrow sidewalk and full on traffic right beside it, to wider sidewalks and only a single lane of traffic going at lower speed.

I picture HSR from Calgary and south commuter rail from leduc&airport with a station under 102 Street between jasper & 102.

I mean the track level under, but the whole street above as a glass-roofed great hall & arcade. A couple parkade entrances to solve but would be so awesome.

Fantasize in one hand, — in the other. See which hand fills up first.
