2020 = Year of the Staycation

Is it even reasonable to assume countries will open their borders to foreign visitors prior to a vaccine being produced and distributed? I could see proof of vaccination being a requirement (similar to a valid passport) before a passenger can step foot (or even check-in) for a foreign bound flight. I don't see why any country would allow non-vaccinated foreigners on their soil, as the risks far outweigh the benefits.

Tourism can always return in the 2021 season, and for now those same Banff/Canmore/Whistler hotels can cater to local and domestic travellers.

A fleet of five 787 is probably more than adequate for WS needs well into next year.

They still have 5 more 787 in the manufacturing pipeline. Not certain how much is paid up front as deposits and progress payments. May make sense just to accept those over the next year or two.

#6 is in final assembly and still expecting a May delivery.

Boeing Halts All Jet Assembly With Closing of Last 787 Plant

By Julie Johnsson, April 6, 2020, 5:08 PM EDT, updated at April 6, 2020, 7:04 PM EDT

Boeing Co. is suspending work at its 787 Dreamliner plant in South Carolina, temporarily shutting down its last commercial-jet factory still operating amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
Manufacturing at the North Charleston factory will stop late April 8, the planemaker said in a statement Monday after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster urged state residents to limit non-essential activity. Boeing’s Seattle-area manufacturing hub remains closed indefinitely as state health officials struggle to contain the virus and suppliers show signs of stress.

The pandemic injects uncertainty into Boeing’s plans for the 787, a critical source of cash. Airlines have parked fleets as demand for long-distance travel has evaporated, and analysts widely expect Boeing to slash Dreamliner output when factory work resumes.

Based on this, is the May delivery of #6 still occurring?

Guess not.
The 6th frame (Tail 907 reg: C-GMKS) was in final assembly, and WS was intending to take delivery as planned in May but with everything changing daily who really knows at this point.

Lufthansa is downsizing its fleet getting rid of 40 aircraft, scraping Germanwings completely and is drastically reducing the Eurowings long haul service, from what I can find online right now it doesn't seem to affect the laugh date from YYC though but I could be wrong. All I could find information on right now is their FRA-PHX, -LAS, and -ANC routes.

Does anyone have info if they scrapped YYC as well? The route doesn't seem to be bookable in their site.

The route has never been bookable on Eurowings website, but you could through Lufthansa. I checked and its fully available in the GDS currently. However, odds are the route will be either cancelled or delayed.

If it is a month or two late I don't think anyone is going to be upset.

I think Westjet needs to republish an updated schedule since their last one on 26 March. Don’t think they’re flying 4 daily to each of YXE, YQR or YLW as an example

Just got a notification e-mail that my NRT-YYC flight in August was cancelled. Routed through YVR instead.

Yup, was completely removed. LHR is also now suspended until July 1. FRA stills appears in June.

AC to LHR scheduled to startup again on 24 June. AC to FRA will be 4 weekly for the first 3 weeks. I think BA has pushed back to 1 Jun as well.

Yup. I’m waiting for WS to update their schedule before updating that list.

On another note, UA reopened reservation from May 4 to IAH, SFO, ORD and DEN.

Westjet announced yesterday that they are laying off 1700 pilots. What didn't get included in the official announcement is that these layoffs impact pilots going back to a 2002 date of hire and the pilots were told not to expect full recall until some point in 2021. So whatever sched Westjet was flying in 2002 is essentially what we can expect in the next few months moving forward and don't expect a return to anything resembling their recent schedule until mid 2021.

^ Must be a tough thing to swallow for the folks at Onex. But no one could have predicted this. Not in a thousand years!

I would suggest after this weekend those UA flights will be gone again...

https://hub.united.com/united-message-munoz-kirby-2645729257.html

“This weekend, we'll load a revamped schedule that will further reduce our capacity to about 10 percent of what had been planned for May at the beginning of this year. We expect to announce similar reductions to the June schedule in the next few weeks. We have now essentially redesigned our network to be down 90 percent... “

Throw in the border restrictions being extended for another 30 days, and your probably right. Seemed odd they were even re-opened in the first place.

To be the optimist here, Onex has very deep pockets and the airline is not a big part of their overall bottom line. As travel recovers, Schwartz has an opportunity to grow Westjet significantly more rapidly than planned as he takes advantage of weakened competitors. I would argue that going private when they did may have saved Westjet as a going concern.
