AA has mainlined both DFW flights from April 20-October 24. Both on the 738.

As well as Delhi, Taipei, Hong Kong and Auckland if either flight goes year round.

AC may be able to pull some connections on BOS-YYC-NRT, but with BOS having their own direct to NRT and so many better one stop flight routes I highly doubt it will have much of an effect.

I'd expect AC to launch YVR-IAD first, but these days you never know.

Agreed. I think they'll launch YVR-IAD as soon as they have built up enough A223's. YYC-IAD is still probably a few years away, if it happens.

WS new service to PUJ is off to a great start. Inaugural flight delayed over 11 hours.

Saw that. It's a good thing there were was no inaugural festivities.

They've scheduled a makeup flight for tomorrow morning.

Just out of curiosity how do you all think that Onex's acquisition of WS will affect YYC? I heard they are deciding to focus on YYZ, YUL, and YOW for the time being. will it affect traffic out of YYC? Or is it just because of our economic situation atm.

YUL and YOW are not hubs for WS. I think they are specifically talking about providing more competition on the eastern triangle and maybe growing YYZ. I don't think WS's hub strategy has changed; almost all of their growth in the past several years has been ex-YYC. We will see new routes launching out of YYZ when the last 4 789s come in 2021.

I posted about this on the other page but AC is downguaging LHR to a 763 for most of February.
https://www.routesonline.com/news/38/air...eb-2020-calgary-london-aircraft-changes/

77W still runs Feb 14/15 & 20-22.

I'm guessing this is due to 333 refurb and MAX grounding. November-January is mixed 788/789, February is 763, March-May is 333 and Summer is back to 789. FRA goes to 77W in winter for a few months. The frame choices seem more to match with what's available vs. what is best fit. I can't imagine FRA needs a 77W in winter.

Onex has deep pockets and a desire to make Westjet a true competitor to Air Canada. Right now WS is still primarily a Western Canadian Airline and only one quarter the size of Air Canada, I am guessing that Onex intends to at least double that. It means taking on AC in the big Central Canadian markets, either by buying Porter or growing organically.

I agree with your statements about ONEX. They will push to gain more market share don’t agree with your stats about the two airlines though. WS flies approximately half of the passengers of AC. 51 million vs 26 million. Fleet sizes are Even closer. I’m sure purchasing Porter would help considerably in narrowing the gaps. As a consumer I don’t wanna see that. With Transit merging into AC I wouldn’t want Porter to disappear too. Having a Duopoly in Canada would suck again. I hope WS just slowly grows naturally. With more 787’s they can take market share with a better product

Porter carries what, 3.5 to 4 million passengers a year I would guess.

It would help WS close the passenger gap, but definitely not considerably.

First and foremost, Porter would help WS get some market share on key routes such as YTZ-YUL/YOW/YQB, etc.

Porter’s network in the US is less significant/relevant for WS. PD flies to the “wrong” airports in certain key markets. IAD (as opposed to DCA) and EWR (as opposed to LGA or JFK, where DL is present).

In this weekend's schedule update, WS has increased PDX to 2x daily for S20. The 2nd flight is a evening departure and morning arrival similiar to how it timed SFO / PHX and LAX last summer.

New flight details:

WS3630 YYC 18:35 - 19:45 PDX DH4
WS3629 PDX 07:00 - 10:05 YYC DH4

Clearly designed to capture PDX traffic to fill Europe 789s.

Don't disagree with your measures of airline size, but it depends how you measure/ value things. ONEX bought Westjet for between $4.5B and $5B (cash and debt). Air Canada's enterprise value is $16.7B. The much higher valuation is because AC is much more of an international airline than WS, and has larger aircraft on average.

Question: My parents had a fairly long layover, but not long enough to leave, so I went up to see them at the airport. We had lunch at the restaurant in the Marriott which was excellent.

The only options I saw for parking were short term at $5 for 30 mins or long term for $20 an hour. Is there another option I'm not aware of? Seems like the airport doesn't want people to come and spend money if it's cost prohibitive to stay for a few hours.

Is there something better for visiting folks at the airport I'm not aware of?

There’s an economy lot on the north side of the terminal that’s cheaper — but not really suitable for short term stays (and it’s not at all convenient).

YYC used to have a free parking grace period for visitors, shoppers and diners a few years ago where short-term parking is now (on the ground level). They took that away, and replaced it with the cellphone lot — which is often overflowing.

The best option, if you’re dining at the Marriott, is to use the hotel’s valet parking service. If you’re eating there, they’re often flexible in what they charge (sometimes they’ll even do it for free depending on the situation — provided you are spending money there). I’ve always had really great, friendly service at the Marriott.

Unfortunately, with the removal of the free short term parking, the retail and restaurants on the pre security side took a hit in sales and most have been subsequently shut down or relocated post security side so there’s not much to do on the pre security side anyways. Sadly, it seems that YYCAA wants to discourage visiting the airport unless you are actually flying.

AC Service Reductions Feb 2019

YYC-LHR downgauges from 789 to 763. 333 in spring.
YYC-LAX down from 2x daily to 1x daily.
YYC-SFO down from 2x daily to 1x daily.

Sorry these are 2020!

While it is frustrating, I’m not sure that the parking change led to that decline. YYC always had much more pre-security retail and restaurants than any other airport I know of, and since the 9/11 security changes made clearing security such a PITA ... I think fewer passengers would spend any time landside. (Even when there was a small grace period for free parking, the vast majority of customers at the airport were passengers.)

I think most of the people taking advantage of the free parking on P1 were just people waiting to pick up — not people going inside to shop or dine.
