Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help

This lovely church is located near NW 32nd & Western -- just south of Memorial Park, and a short distance from the Paseo District.
Built in 1924, it is receiving an extensive renovation.

Items being worked on:

Return tabernacle to original position behind the altar
Add artwork to the triumphal arch that honors the Church in Oklahoma
Add artwork, other elements to create shrine for Bl. Stanley Rother
Add new altar, ambo, cathedra and reredos
Marbleize columns
Paint and update all upper surfaces
Improve restrooms, confessionals

Love that barrel vault roof/quonset hut looking building. Didn't you say that site was a former airfield? Looks like they're paying homage to the vintage style of airport hangers.

Yeah, I agree -- I think it's a cool looking structure.

And yes, it must be a tribute to the airpark's past.
I don't know why that didn't occur to me when I first saw the renderings (headslap).

I did scrounge up some old photos of the airpark.

Here's an aerial from a 1948 newspaper article:

The Terminal building was flanked on both sides by curved roof hangars.
In fact, the one on the left is just about where the new building is to go -- though the orientation is different.

An aerial from 2002 shows more structures on the site.

A few years later, though, many of the buildings were demolished:

I think this building is going to fit in with the historic buildings of Automobile Alley much better than I originally imagined.
It looked very sleek, but 'colder' in the renderings.
The actual building is looking a bit warmer and friendlier, to my eyes.

BancFirst Tower

Construction has commenced on this extensive renovation.
Fences went up a few weeks ago, and the stripping of the columns has been the first order of business.

The glass pyramid structure covers an entrance to the underground concourse.

Southwest corner

The glass pyramids on the west side provide natural lighting to the concourse below and give street level pedestrians a view of the underground (including the Hot Tamale Grill).

The work on the outdoor plaza and patio areas should start shortly after (or possibly concurrently with) the column reskinning.

New Mixed-Use Development at 9400 N. Broadway

An 8 story office complex on north Broadway is about to get more interesting.

This complex was purchased by Le Norman Properties back in 2011.
David Le Norman, an OKC oil executive, owns this real estate / development firm.

Le Norman Properties now plans to develop the land immediately east of the tower.

This plot is to be developed into a 3 story mixed-use building with its own dedicated parking garage in the rear.

A new apartment complex is coming to the Deep Deuce section of downtown.

Part of the Plan

The developer, Richard McKown, also built both the Level and Mosaic apartments.
With the Level East apartments, this would complete a trio of residential projects in this one area.

The original member of the trio, the Level apartments were completed in 2012.

The complex contains a small, local grocery store - Native Roots Market - as an amenity.
At the moment, it remains the only true grocery in the downtown area.

This has since changed concepts - recently redone as 'Bar Cicchetti', an Italian restaurant and sports bar.

The newly proposed building has the same general design as the other two.
One difference though is that Level East will have a brick exterior as opposed to the stucco used in the first two projects.

Flixbus announces a new Oklahoma / Texas route.

Currently, they operate on the east and west coasts of the US, plus Texas-Louisiana.

The newly announced route will connect Tulsa -> OKC -> Dallas -> Houston.

Clark Crew BBQ

When I posted several months back about the renovation being done by Clark Crew BBQ, here's what the building originally looked like:

It had previously been an Italian restaurant.

Clark Crew had plans to build a new smokehouse.
But I figured that the changes to the existing building would be largely on the interior, not so much on the exterior.

Um.... WRONG!

The transformation is so great, I can hardly even tell that it's the same structure.

That's a lot of money they've plunked down on the rehab.
Hopefully it turns out to be worth it.

It's not open yet, but apparently that date is not far off.

Just for reference, I'll point out some of the surrounding structures...

In the background, to the right, is a trio of nearly identical office buildings.
This is Landmark Towers.

At the intersection of NW Expressway and Grand Blvd, the group of (mostly) beige/brown brick buildings is the Integris Baptist Medical Center.

Further down NW Expressway, the black tower with red trim is Union Plaza.

Also down the road, but on the left, the white tower is Embassy Suites (originally a Marriott Hotel) that is receiving an extensive renovation.

This is all slightly south of Lake Hefner.
A lot of activity has been occurring in this area -- it's worth another post of its own.

You can also tell that a section of NW Expressway has recently been re-paved.
That was done several month ago.

OK Distillery and Brewpub

This is the distillery that will be located in west downtown just a short hop from Stonecloud Brewery (at the old Sunshine Cleaners building).

Chrysler Plymouth Building

Located at NW 13th & Harvey, Walter E. Allen's Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership was originally built in 1946.

It featured some neat innovations for the time, including a ventilation system that removed engine exhaust gases from the shop, and hydraulic lifts for easier repair.

Unfortunately, the dealership only lasted about a decade, going bankrupt in 1955.
Perhaps the state-of-the-art equipment was too expensive to maintain at that time.

After it went belly up, the building was subdivided:

The western portion (maintenance side) became a mechanic's shop.
The eastern portion (showroom) went through several iterations, eventually becoming the home of an equipment rental company.

Recently, the western end of the old dealership was renovated as office space.
This portion is now referred to as The Monterey (or 309 Monterey).

Showroom Side

The showroom section of the old dealership is the more architecturally interesting side (to me, at least) because of the curved glass.
The interior has a cool design with some thoughtful touches.

It was sold a few months ago to Pivot Project, an OKC development group.

They originally bought it with a specific tenant in mind, but that tenant backed out.
Nevertheless, they are proceeding with the renovation while looking for other prospective tenant(s).

Pivot recently released some renderings for what they plan for the rehab.
