Good Day.
We didn't.
We had a pilot project train that the -relatively- few users got used to, and were -somewhat- polite about protocol, eventually.
And the BRT TransitWay was not a rapid transit line.
It was, and should not have been, an amalgam of one-seat commuter lines overcrowding the few real transit lines running down the Way.
Result, a TransitWay that never worked as it should have, and was supposed to have, and was sold to us as being - a bus-train of buses shuttling back-and-forth along the way, every bus is your bus, picking up from and dropping off to the feeder routes (including those one-seat wonders) at each and every stop on the Way.
A spine system, requiring transfers. Yup - big city stuff.
We now have a full blown, big-city, in production, spine system, with which the -majority- of users are not yet used to, and know nothing of the polite protocol necessary,
being too used to the door-crush insanity forced upon, and bred into, all of us
by enough drivers who have often enough closed doors in our faces (getting on or off, stranding us on or off), driven away from us or skipped over our stop (so we wait an hour for the next bus), cut out of the stop bus line queue before completing the stop conga (leaving us behind for the next bus an hour later), and on and on and on.
(not all - by a long shot. I have ridden with many good ones. But ! )
Result - a learning curve for a whole city of users - frequent and occasional, commuters and errand-runners and shoppers, students and workers, etc.

Not all dumb (though a trainload of 'em really are !), but frustrated by it, tired of it, and have had enough of it.
It's gonna take a lotta time, patience, and bitchin', to get this thing right.
Even the Montreal Metro had growing pains back in '66 - it was good, but not all sweetness and light.
And by all reports (personal, anecdotal, media), TTC subway and STM Metro are both suffering from overcrowding these days, with people jams at the doors and on the platforms.
(yeah, i'm still astonished at OUR platforms - my sense of it still says they are too....too....too narrow for even a moving rush hour, let alone a crush rush load.
And they are all identical in space, essentially, with those locations which had room not taking advantage of it to spread out even a bit !?!)
So.....given this is a brand new system, we should......should......have capacity for less crowding than what we have. We were supposed to !!!!
Dear Mr. Manconi.......where are those other two trains, please ?! At the least.
And where are the subsequent ones we purchased early, to have been anticipating this very problem, please ?!
Ah, well.......We Will EnJoy It ..... eventually !
