It may be time to consider bike-free zones in dangerous places.

...or do something to make them safer?

There are very few alternatives to crossing the 174 in Orleans.

Personally I would take Orleans Blvd because there are no ramps there, but it's still not very good.

This is tragic. When I was 13 I rode my bike everywhere too. It's not like I had a lot of other transportation options.

Also, what a horrible, hostile place for anyone not in a car. This ramp is designed for someone to drive 100km/hr straight onto the highway.

That's not going to do much for reducing casualties because most road fatalities are caused by drivers hitting other people in cars, bikes and on the sidewalk. Common denominator: cars. Solution: negate cars from the equation by building segregated bike infrastructure.

This ramp, and every other ramp on an overpass in this city, and every other city.

Looks like road design just before we started at least painting in bike lanes in the mid 80s. I see this on Hunt Club where parts have a painted in lane, and another section was built maybe months or a year earlier with zero accommodation for bikes.

Unfortunately, this is going to take decades to upgrade roads to provide safer biking infrastructure.

Problem is there there only so many highway overpasses.

In Convent Glen's original masterplan, there was the intention to interconnect the pathways across the highway. The ROWs are there, and when the MTO widened the highway, they should have insisted on putting box culverts which would have been relatively cheap to put in then. Now that the city owns the 174 and rebuilding it for the LRT, maybe it's time to revisit this plan.

At some point in the LRT EA, or some early stage like that - I had suggested a T-bridge for better community access to Jeanne D'Arc Station. Still relevant...

For sure it is.

You can see in the satellite image the crazy angle of the ramp in the NW corner (from west/south on Jeanne d'Arc to West on 174). I think as part of LRT there are at least plans to square off the ramp terminal and make it more of a 90-degree turn from Jeanne d'Arc.

Good that they're extending the bike lanes on O'Connor.

The problem with the cycling infrastructure in this city is that the paths just abruptly end and dump you onto the street with cars whizzing by sometimes at 80 km/h

On what basis do you say this? This article has no facts.

The Laurier incident maybe but it is also universally considered a poor design so how much can we blame the driver.

Agreed. Without any details, it is impossible to draw conclusions about guilt. Regardless, it is tragic to see a life end at such a young age.

Or another equally silly argument is maybe it is time to consider car-free zones in dangerous places.

In Ontario, insurance wise, the driver is at fault in ALL collisions with a pedestrian or cyclist.

The licensed person wielding the massive heavy machine is expected to be more aware and cautious than the 13 year old child on the comparably tiny bicycle.

There is a difference between being legally guilty and being careless. The city could be considered at blame for not making the speed limit on ALL streets in Ottawa 30 km/h.

Again we don’t know maybe he jumped off the sidewalk in front of the car.

No cars are not fault in ALL collisions. The onus of proof is on the driver to prove it wasn’t their fault.

30km on all city roads is beyond silly. Residential side streets yes but too many are busy commuter routes to even get any headway on these.

I think part of the problem is “what happened” is rarely released, which makes it hard for drivers or cyclists to learn any lessons from these tragedies.

Pedestrians or cyclists have no choice but to go across the ramp, at this or many other such locations.
(the cyclist being 13-year-old is probably a factor, as is the driver being 79-year-old)
