Just a little reminder that it's the busiest bridge in Canada.

It's just been announced that a new 6.5 km tunnel under the St Lawrence will be the third link between the eastern part of Quebec City and Lévis.

The tunnel will also pass under the western tip of Île d'Orléans. The island will also be getting a new bridge as part of this megaproject.

Construction is set to begin in 2022 with completion in 2027.

Is the new bridge the replacement of the current one (Route 368), or is it for the 3rd link? In the latter case, Quebec City’s gonna have its own version of Pont-Tunnel Hyppolyte LaFontaine.

Also, are dangerous goods allowed to pass through the tunnel???

Sounds like that will be cheap.

I liked the old bridge.

Ile d'Orleans is a delight BTW. Anytime I spend some time in QC, I make a point of taking a drive to the island, and perhaps also Montmorency Falls and maybe Ste Anne de Beaupre at the same time.

Beautiful area indeed. My ancestors, on both paternal and maternal side moved to Ile d’Orléans in the 1660’s, I found the land where they settled down, identified with commemorative plates. The oldest cheese in North America is also produced there and it is delicious. I am glad the island will not be connected to the new tunnel.

This has been bouncing around in my skull for a few days. But with the amount of times I have driven across the country, it became apparent to me that if you play Stomping Tom Conners while driving you can learn a lot about the country and the areas you are driving through.

I actually new Tilsonburg was tobacco country. And the story of Big Joe Mufferaw had me as I drove down the beside the Ottawa river.

Any way as vacation driving season is upon us again. favorite loops to drive.

Just did Edmonton to Banff (Old Coach Rd), to Radium then back to Lake Louse and highway 93 to Jasper then back to Edmonton after a stop at Folding Mountain brewery in Hinton.

Did a loop around Lesser Slave lake last week after I finished a meeting north of the lake. Great drive.

Next up Highway 40 through Cadomin to Nordegg.

Planning for next year to drive to NFLD and do the trip we were supposed to do last year but had to cancel.

Also planning the drive to Tuk. year and a half to plan it right and get the proper tires for the route.

Nice! I was heading west on 407 from Tauton Road (aka the part that’s supposed to be 418) just now.

I know it's off topic but one thing I've learned since being in China is that they put much more effort into how their main streets and highways look than we do. Ours are so utilitarian but the Chinese make an effort to include tons of shrubbery and roadside foliage. There's also many more example of streetside art in China. I really wish Canadian cities put in a little more effort to beautify their thoroughfares.

Amazing what you can do when you can hire people for 25 bucks a day...

In my hometown of North Bay, people used to volunteer to beautify a street. No idea why it stopped.

^ Small town, small scale stuff is possible with volunteer efforts, but things on the scale of what one sees in China can only be done with large amounts of cheap labour.

Sure but cost isn't the issue at hand. In fact, that has nothing whatsoever to do with it. They planned it all. Why don't we?

Cost is for sure the issue. Growing the plants, planting them, maintaining them... that is all the biggest expense with that sort of thing.

I get it, I like the landscaping along Chinese highways. But when you consider the costs and sheer lengths of road one can understand why that sort of thing doesn't exist here. I suspect that short 'showcase' stretches of landscaped road is probably the best that we're going to get.

A highway is a functional thing. Even the prettiest divided freeway is an ugly, but necessary piece of infrastructure.

Also, minimizing distractions is a goal of highway designers. For instance, the new bridge near the Hoover Dam intentionally obscures the dam itself because people would gawk and not pay attention to the road.

The 'scenic routes' being prettied up I get. Otherwise, the effort goes to waste, or is intentionally distracting - which is bad.
